Some places in the south saw some welcome rain last night, after having gone over month without any rain, though much of England and Wales will be cloudy and cool today, with showery rain in places, before easing later. However, Scotland and N. Ireland will be mostly dry with sunny spells. High pressure close to the northeast, which has kept Scotland dry and fine over recent days, will extend its influence across all parts from Sunday and through much of the next week. So, becoming mostly dry and fine with sunny spells.

High pressure in the driving seat next week, so mostly dry and sunny, but a cold easterly wind at first before easing to warmer weather later

Today

For now, it’s a mostly grey, cool and, in places, damp start across England and Wales. Outbreaks of locally heavy rain, thundery in the early hours near the south coast, spread north across many areas overnight, though the north of England has stayed mostly dry so far. Outbreaks of rain, locally heavy, affecting SE Wales, the West Country, Midlands across to Lincolnshire and Norfolk at breakfast time will spread north towards northern England through the rest of the morning, but tending to turn more showery. Much of England and Wales remaining on the cloudy side for much of the day, with showers lingering across Wales, Midlands and northern England into the afternoon before easing by evening, some bright or sunny spells may develop across southern areas though, but this could trigger the odd sharp shower in the southwest. Temperatures reaching 11-14C where it stays cloudy, but with any sunny spells this afternoon in the south it may reach 16-17C.

Scotland, the far north of England and N. Ireland staying dry with patchy cloud but a good deal of sunshine after a chilly start, but an onshore breeze pegging back temperatures to 8-10C along North Sea coasts, otherwise temperatures reaching 11-13C.

Tonight

Away from cloudier North Sea coasts, clear skies across Scotland, N. Ireland and far north of England will lead to a chilly night, with a frost forming locally. England and Wales staying mainly cloudy, but any showers fading, while some clear spells are likely across SE England.

Sunday

Sunday looks to start off on the cloudy side across much of England and Wales, but it will brighten up across eastern areas through the morning, with sunnier skies slowly filtering west across many parts through the day, though the far west, including N. Ireland, may stay rather cloudy with the odd shower. Scotland enjoying another fine day with plenty of sunshine once any early low cloud in the east lifts. Warmer than the last few days, temperatures reaching 12-16C across Scotland and Northern Ireland, but cooler along North Sea coasts. Across England and Wales reaching 16-19C away from cooler North Sea coasts and cloudier far west.

Next week

High pressure centred towards Scandinavia early next week and close to the east in the second half of the week will ensure most places stay dry and settled through much of next week - with a good deal of sunshine for many. Though the far southwest of England will be cloudier on Monday with the odd shower.

There will be a strong easterly wind during the first half of the week though, taking the edge of the temperature – particularly towards North Sea coasts with sea temperatures only in single digits. So the highest temperatures, reaching the mid-to-high teens will be towards the west. Warmer later in the week, as that easterly wind eases, with temperatures reaching the low twenties in the south. It will turn chilly overnight under clear skies.
