VIDEO: Colder but more settled spell on the way for end of the week

A look at the weather for the UK for the rest of the week as pressure rises but with much colder air.

Over the next few days the UK will see a blanket cloud over parts of the country. Where the cloud spreads it will be dull, grey and if the wind is brisk it will feel chilly. Away from the cloud, the sunshine will be cheery and does now have more warmth in it but again the wind is quite a factor. By night those clear skies mean falling temperatures and a widespread frost.

On Wednesday a stark boundary between cold air in the north and mild conditions to the south was defined by a band of rain. This continues to edge southwards but will wave northwards again on Thursday, over Wales, the Bristol Channel, north Devon and now seeming more over the West Midlands. By the afternoon the rain could also be over more of the Midlands. This ongoing area of cloud and dampness will mean a gloomy day for a portion of southern Britain with a NE breeze.

By Friday, the frontal band fades, the rain stops although the cloud lingers. Further north there will be clear skies and sunshine but a cold start as the winds swing to the north and then the northeast. There could be a few wintry flurries in showers coming off the North Sea on those cold winds. Not much but just a sign of the cold air, you may see a few snowflakes fluttering by the window.

UK weather more frost

The cold air takes hold, frosts by night and an area of rain will work its way around the high pressure which could clip SW England later on Friday with a bit of snow for Dartmoor. England and Wales in the brisk east winds with low cloud off the North Sea will feel cold and those winds will only strengthen by Saturday.

The area of rain looks to pull up over Ireland and could bring snow to western Scotland by early Sunday. All dependent on the position of the high and the wind direction. By the end of the weekend, the winds shift again and it looks like cloud and rain will settle over Ireland and Northern Ireland with a colder Sunday night to the SE.
