Happy New Year! Not a dramatic start to 2020 but changes not too far off

2020 has arrived with no dramatic weather but some changes are afoot with rain and colder air moving southeast tomorrow.

A new year and a new decade have arrived, the weather hasn't read the memo though, as we're starting 2020 with a very similar picture to the end of 2019. There will be some changes on the way in the not too distant future, with low pressure doing what it can to invade from the northwest, as the high pressure to our south wavers.

Today, if you're nursing a sore head, there's nothing too dramatic happening to upset things. There's some showery, drizzly rain in the southwest of England and South Wales, but beyond that it's dry. There'll be a fair bit of cloud about throughout the day, with northeast England, north Wales and eastern Scotland perhaps best placed to see some sunny spells.

If you're out and about, it's not as mild as of late in most places, although the southwest may well see double figures. Elsewhere, 4-7c will be pretty typical.

Temperatures on New Year's Day

With all the cloud, a mild, frost-free (for the vast majority) night follows, with temperatures staying at pretty much where they were all day. By dawn, a band of rain will have made it into the far northwest of both Scotland and Ireland, and that'll be moving slowly southeast through the day. Ahead of it, there'll be little change with plenty of cloudy and quite mild weather.

Temperatures across England and Wales will be up a touch on today, with many places seeing 10-12c. Behind the front bringing the rain, the air will be fresher and clearer with some sunny spells breaking through, but some sharp, blustery showers will move down from the northwest.

The wind will be quite a feature tomorrow (Thursday) too, especially in the north and west where gales are possible in exposed spots.

Windy Thursday

Overnight, with the colder, clearer air across the northern half of the country, there'll be some frost and ice likely. Early Friday, the last of the cloud and patchy rain should clear the southeast of the country to leave all parts bright, but chilly. There'll be a few showers around - especially across the north of Scotland, where they'll be falling as sleet and snow, particularly over the hills.

More cloud is likely to fill in later in the day and overnight, so although there'll be a frost, it'll be patchy and may come and go. There'll be more general rain, sleet and snow affecting the north of Scotland for a time too. The weekend then brings cloudier skies, with some rain at times in the north and northwest, and perhaps some drizzly stuff over the higher ground further south too. Temperatures will be on the mild-side again by this point too.

From the whole team here at Netweather, wishing you a very happy, healthy 2020.
