First of all and most importantly, Merry Christmas from the whole of the team here at Netweather.

Weather-wise, Christmas day has brought us a rare treat, and that's high pressure over the country. For those hunting out a white Christmas, there has been some wintriness in the few showers up over the highest peaks of northern Scotland, but for the vast majority, this Xmas is a dry, green one.

Temperatures on Christmas afternoon

There is a seasonal chill in the air, and plenty of sunshine if you're planning on an apres-Christmas dinner walk. There'll even be a widespread ground frost during the evening and first part of the night before cloud spills in from the southwest ahead of the Boxing Day rain and wind. By dawn, the only spots left with frost are likely to be in the northeast of Scotland.

Boxing Day then sees outbreaks of, at times, heavy rain spreading up from the southwest.

The northern half of Scotland, and particularly the northwest will avoid much of it, with some sunny spells breaking through. Elsewhere, a relatively short period of persistent rain will be followed by some sharp showers, blown through on a blustery wind - especially in the west and south. That's also where the bulk of the showers will be, although just about anywhere across England, Wales and southern Scotland are liable to catch one. Between the showers, there should be some sunny spells though.

Beyond Boxing Day, although it may take a while for any rain in the south to clear on Friday, we'll have a familiar pattern setting up, with high pressure dominant to the south and southeast, but low pressure continuing to try to push in from the northwest. That'll mean more in the way of dry, bright weather the further southeast you are, but head northwest and the chances of seeing wind and rain increases.
