Ok, who stole our summer?

Low pressure is on the scene today, so wind and rain is the theme. Beyond that, more sunshine and showers.

As weather maps for high summer go, for most people the one below isn't pretty viewing.

Weather map for today

With low pressure well in charge, you'll not be surprised to know that the weather today isn't going to be filled with sunny skies and warmth. All parts will see some rain pushing up from the southwest, and it'll be windy too. Following the rain, there'll be blustery showers blowing in. Northern Scotland is the place to be to stay driest for longest today, with the far north not seeing any rain until the evening.

Temperatures today won't look so bad on paper, but will be tempered by the wind and will certainly cool off as the rain or any showers move through. For England and Wales, the high-teens or low-twenties will be typical. Scotland and Northern Ireland, the mid-high teens.

Overnight tonight, the persistent rain will slowly clear from the southeast. There'll be a good few showers elsewhere though - especially in western parts. They'll be widespread to start the day tomorrow but will become more scattered as the day wears on, allowing for some sunny spells to develop.

It'll be another blustery day, making it feel cool. Temperatures typically won't better the high-teens, but perhaps with a bit of shelter from the southwest wind, parts of Southeast Scotland may see highs into the low-twenties.

As we move toward the end of the week and into the weekend, the sunshine and showers theme continues. The southeast corner should miss the vast majority of them though, leaving a mostly dry and reasonably warm weekend here. But elsewhere it'll be feeling a little on the cool side with the most frequent showers affecting northern and western regions.

Off On Holiday Soon?

With the bad news covered, what about if you're off to find sunnier skies? The good news is that there's plenty of hot sunshine to be had in southern Europe at the moment, some of it very hot.

Forecast highs today:
Majorca : 36c
Costa Del Sol : 35c
Lanzarote : 27c
Malta : 30c
Lagos : 43c

Back in the UK, there's little to suggest any dramatic changes in our weather through into next week, with low pressure continuing to be the main player. For that to change, we need the jet stream to move north again.
