Superb pics! Saw them from Fife as well but later on and the colours were washed out by then.

Hello everyone,

This is my first post in this nice forum. I am a PhD student in University of Manchester. I work on weather radars (specifically in dual-pol radars). However, I've liked weather and atmospheric phenomena since I was a child. That's all for me.

Here I collected a couple of photos from nacreous clouds occured last week over the UK. Photos are not mine as you can see. Enjoy:

My blog has a few photos from Edinburgh and East Lothian and the video from my house, but there was a bit too much sunlight by then. At least I saw them

I take it we all realise the significance of these stratospheric clouds?

Since their ample appearances over the N.Hemisphere this winter ( and warm temps over the trop in the Arctic?) I should say folk might need to concern themselves over the record Arctic Ozone hole of 2011 being beaten this March as a result of the cold temps , and chemistry, over the polar region???

Update for Dec 2018, very cold air above us in the Stratosphere, but that's only one ingredient https://www.netweather.tv/weather-forecasts/news/9319-what-is-so-special-about-nacreous-clouds--mother-of-pearl-polar-stratospheric-clouds pic Duncan Mc

  • April 2024 - Was it that cold overall? A look at the statistics

General perception from many is that April was a cold month, but statistics would suggest otherwise, with the average temperature for the whole month coming in just above the 30 year average for the UK as a whole.
