It’s just gone midnight here but it’s still not quite completely dark yet, still quite a bright glow in the sky looking northwards. Sunset was 2 and 1/2 hours ago. That’s the benefit of being further north in the summer, you get really short nights and very long twilight times.

In fact, technically nowhere in the UK in June gets completely dark, it doesn’t get any darker than astronomical twilight. However this normally still looks completely dark unless it’s a very clear sky, in which case the sky will take on more of a deep blue tinge. The far north of Northern England and Scotland doesn’t get any darker than nautical twilight, so the sky never gets darker than navy blue, and in the far north of the Shetland Islands, it never gets darker than civil twilight. This means that even at 1 am, it’s still just about light enough (weather permitting) to perform outdoor activities without artificial lighting. You could quite comfortably play a round of golf at midnight up in the Shetland Islands at this time of year. I find this incredible.

I was talking about this with my brother just a few hours ago how the sky never completely darkens and when you look north you can see the sky glowing. He thought it was the moon. The sky always seems brighter to the northeast than northwest

Yeah, this is the time of year where even now at 1am I can see a very faint glow on the north-eastern horizon if the skies are clear.

28th July here when technical night time comes back. Though by mid July it’s becoming noticeable the nights are becoming longer again.

Proper summer weather has arrived here, reached 27°C yesterday with blue skies. Next week looks like staying fairly warm with a good chance of thunderstorms, looking forward to it

What? Where’s this come from? BBC forecast yesterday was for sunny spells tomorrow?

Given the disappointing Wednesday, Thursday this is really annoying especially under a big ridge of high pressure.

Has to be said, the Arome take is very different.

The forecasts over the past 4 - 5 days really have been pitiful.

This is from 'South Today'

Yeah, rained here a fair bit later on last night, with more forecast tomorrow and Monday. This rain has only come into the forecast today.

Given the dominance of hp, where’s this rain come from, and why is it so difficult to predict  until the very short term?

Looks like the north is actually getting the best weather just at the moment! Pretty unusual to say the least. I’m sure the tables will turn once we get into August. The south east will be mid 20s and sunny while I will be mid teens and drizzly.

Having not viewed the models for 24 hours it does seem we have seen fairly large changes.

So yesterday the day 7-10 outlook was essentially a pressure build to our north east Vs a pressure build in the Atlantic.

This morning although the Euro has a much slower, weaker progression from the Atlantic all three models (GFS and GEM bring the other two) essentially say that the Atlantic will force a more traditional Azores Ridge around day 7 which pushes east into Europe but looks like it will moved aside by a new low. A warm breakdown essentially from the GFS and GEM (Euro has the Atlantic much weaker but same starting pattern).

But look at the FAX:

PPVE89.thumb.gif.5cc83371bfd67c70daea024ed564e5c7.gif

In the first screenshot you can see a sneaky little low just to the south west of Cornwall, she’s even pointing to it, probably saying something like “it’ll be dry and sunny for most of us but this unexpected low within the high could give some rain to the south coast.“

As for the fax it is odd that we’re seeing two weather fronts which in an area of high pressure. Certainly no rain forecast here according to bbc weather app anyway.

But she didn't say that.

What's the betting that it will be largely cloudy for most parts come next Thursday for the solar eclipse?

Almost certainly will be cloudy then! I did not know there was an eclipse coming up, will it be a big one?

Already feeling very warm here, though a bit more cloud around than yesterday. Currently 20°C.

I’m looking forward to the next big one where it goes dark for a few minutes. Do you know when the next big one will be?

Not looking great tomorrow, be lucky if it stays dry

BBC weather app forecasting no rain for the foreseeable future here, Thursday (eclipse day) is forecast to be mostly cloudy though... what a surprise!

14th June ....2151,                that's the next total solar eclipse visible from both our current locations.

The next very large partial eclipse is 12th August 2026
