Evening all

No snow here in lowland East London but it's been a very cold day especially out of the sun and in the wind - a maximum of 6c would be adequate in January, not April.

A frost already forming on the cars by 8.30pm suggesting a very cold night approaching - not sure what the lowest minimum temperature ever recorded in London for April is but would be interesting to see if we are approaching that tonight.

Currently -1.4, the lowest April minimum since I began recording fifteen years ago. Also colder than any night in the 'winter' of 2019 to 2020.

Wasnt expecting to wake up to a light snow covering on grass and cars this morning, thankfully nothing settled on pavements and roads. Still a bitter wind blowing too. According to another dog walker I saw this morning, it was blizzards at 10pm last night, Id already gone to bed so missed it.

light snow covering here also but melting now in sun, still got gusty cold winds, and yes saw blizzard conditions yesterday evening could see in a security light snow whipping around and a white covering on our garden. The car was   covered in snow till about an hour or so ago but temps outside only about 3 or 4.

No snow here as yet today, which actually makes a change this week. Anything expected?

Morning All! Well the charts seem. Relentless with the cold pattern at the moment. More nuisance factor than anything else.... A renewed push from the north for the weekend doesn't help much... No snow but that wind is biting....

tbh if this cold spell is just going to be what it has been like today, i can manage it. It's when its cold, overcast and damp that i hate so much from the cold spells.

Hi - I think that may have been Sunday 6 April 2008 - in Crystal Palace we woke up to four inches of snow and a fun morning was had by many in the local parks. Most of the snow thawed during the afternoon. That day I recorded a maximum of 9.2 and a minimum of (+) 1.7, so it was less cold than today is likely to be, exactly thirteen years later.

I thought it was an afternoon event. I remember looking out at snow sweeping across the bridge for about an hour: it was hammering down.

But I may be misremembering.

ah I think I’m out by a decade! I reckon it was Monday 10th April 2006.

  • April 2024 - Was it that cold overall? A look at the statistics

General perception from many is that April was a cold month, but statistics would suggest otherwise, with the average temperature for the whole month coming in just above the 30 year average for the UK as a whole. A warm first half to to the month averaged out the cold second half. View the full blog here
