I'm liking the talk of a weakened SPV leading into winter and La Nina conditions favouring a 'front loaded' winter, but then I've seen this talk many times before and it's failed to deliver wintry weather.

Also though I'm liking the Met Office contingency planner which reckons October is likely to be settled and mild but November and December likely to bring cold north to north westerlies - Often good around the Cheshire Gap!

Pretty sure there'll be Snow-on-Trent at some point, anyway!

Agreed, I wonder if it’s all to do with the South Antarctic having its coldest Winter on record, only joking....but yes long way to go

Nice to see BBC have decided in the last hour were now 2 degrees cooler and cloudy all day, been ramping it up all week 21 degrees with sunshine and cloud

Watched ITV weather right now and it has the entire region under wall to wall sunshine. Very odd, all they needed to do was take a glance at the satellite pictures. Story of the year, high pressure never delivering sun.

Rain and drizzle all morning here, accompanied by thick fog until half an hour ago, courtesy of the weak cold front moving very slowly north west and in marked contrast to the forecast which was for dry and cloudy weather, perhaps with a few bright intervals.

The good thing about living in Stoke is that even in a ‘zonal’ pattern there are often snowy spells.

I don’t have to pray for an exceptional setup anymore like when I lived in London!

but not Stafford, Stoke has key elevation advantage which can bring snow from PM air

I must think about lopping the top out of my front door garden tree.

The wife now understands that it must be done annually -   to keep it in good shape!

That marginal setup often brings the best snowfalls here. While ironically the more severe cold setups tend to leave Stoke high and dry.

Agreed, that tree needs to be kept in good shape

But I think your good wife will clock on to things when that annual date is on the 1st December every year

The area of heavy rain which looked so threatening a few hours ago seems to have almost split in half with one half going towards Lincolnshire and other over north Wales. Here, between the two, we have just a spell of light-moderate rain which looks as if it will clear in the next hour or so. Any chance of thunder at this location will rely on the heavy showers currently over mid Wales making it this far north east and maintaining their intensity.

Strange morning here. Massive roll of thunder around 7 am, enough to wake lots of people up, and a short period of very heavy rain. Then easing off a lot, with even the odd glimpse of sunshine at times. Now steady moderate rain again, though not especially dark considering the gloominess of the skies.

Looking like the end of the world here just now.

Been a very showery morning and even had a few glimpses of the sun about 10:00.

Now dark, with heavy rain (5.7mms so far).

Supposed to cheer up this afternoon.

 No gardening for me!

 MIA

Edit - Just heard distant rumble of thunder, and still getting heavier.

Better not enjoy it too much as the missus is out playing golf.

Shes going to come home and will start blaming me for it!

More rumbles and a flash again just now..

edit edit

Flashes overhead now and torrential horizontal rain.

Better than any of the summer attempts at storms.

Another update..

 Thunder and lightening still ongoing.

Temperature is also now falling rapidly has been above 16.8C all morning (17.2C max).

Now down to 11.2C.  Must be the colder air moving in. Another wave of it due later on after heavy overnight rain.

Rain now just steady, but still really dark.

This must have been the storm that developed south of Worcester, and it is now moving up to towards Leicester and Nottingham.

Probably still developing.

MIA

and 10 minutes later the sun appears again. Rainfall dumped by it was 6.9mms.

Sunny again now here in N Worcs, and doesn't feel storm at all, just breezy. Really very localised stuff today.

Sun-on-Trent, for a change. Looking forward to tomorrow's brighter and cooler conditions. Fed up with the high humidity and rain. Only blessing has been the lack of strong winds.

According to my lightening tracker it more or less developed over us, and rapidly expanded eastwards (in a line) towards Ryten in Dunsmoor (other side of M1) and is now moving steadily North East, towards Leicester..

It seems as though the line is electrifying along its whole length.

Trouble is, we’re now getting into the time of year where mild conditions are normally accompanied by wind and rain.

Today’s colder and brighter weather has been nice.

can someone explain how it’s raining under blue skies? very weird, no rain clouds immediately nearby and not that windy so it’s baffled me
