1988 awful summer

1992 cool wet summer

1996 pretty average summer

2000 meh summer which led to the wettest Autumn on record

2004 pretty mediocre

2008 poor summer

What about Euro 1976? Seems to disprove the theory slightly perhaps! Definitely seems to have been something in that in recent years though. 1996 was somewhat better than many of the others though. Decent weather during the tournament in England for the most part.

Last june was unbievable the wettest on record here and cold one particular cold day was colder that 1997 what a mixed summer last year was overall though it was the wettest since the infamous 2007-2012 period,and the say summers are getting drier,the year before was the exception like 1976 a one in a blue moon.

Summer 1996 is often underrated because it suffers by comparison with the summer of 1995 and the hot August of 1997.  From the Scottish Lowlands southwards it was a generally sunnier and drier than average summer with slightly above average temperatures arrived at via warm days and coolish nights.  1984 also had a pretty good summer, especially the July.

As for the sunshine, there are data for Kew Gardens but not from the same site as Heathrow - they should be freely available from MIDAS Open at https://catalogue.ceda.ac.uk/uuid/dbd451271eb04662beade68da43546e1 although it does require an account.   I'm not sure about how other countries operate, though I have heard that Warsaw's Kipp-Zonen sunshine recorder has been held suspect in the past for applying a high threshold.

Thanks, I assume Kew still uses the CS? It averages 1653 hours vs Heathrow's 1633 hours for the 1981-2010 period.

Warsaw has been having some ridiculous years with 2200 hours of sun, roughly the same as Naples! London and Paris should have similar sunshine averages, but for the last decade London has 1522 hours and Paris has 1818! Poland and New Zealand have both seen sun hours increase after switching to electronic recorders.

June was warmer and drier than average, July and August were both close to normal.
