Loads of good information on the Telegraph's website, unfortunately most behind a paywall. This interesting article from this morning:

Coronavirus myths: 9 myths, scams and conspiracy theories that have gone viral

As fears about outbreak grow, so too do the number of myths about the virus – and many are more dangerous than the disease itself.

6. Coronavirus was leaked from a high security lab in Wuhan and China is trying to cover it up

FALSE. About as likely as the Salisbury novichok attack of last year emanating from our own high security laboratory at Porton Down which is not more than a stone's throw from the historic city. In short it’s total nonsense, up there with wacko theories about 9/11, the Holocaust and the death of JFK. The coronavirus is just another zoonotic infection - a virus that jumped from animals to humans. The Spanish flu, HIV and Ebola are others.

All gatherings with more than 5,000 people in a confined space in France are now banned due to coronavirus.

Not planning on going to one but I've seen this too on BFMTV live.

A nice piece of advertising for the grocery retailers. Why don't people see through this "merde". Do your shopping, if you're feeling a little bit vulnerable do a little more but for the Universe's sake don't give retailers the excuse for an ad-hoc advertising campaign. But they won't - we've been through this in the decision making discussions. It's not the virus that will scupper us it's human behaviour.

Rather than panic-buy, I think I'll just augment the contents of my Red Cross food-parcels with whatever's left in Lidl, once the gannets have departed...?

It'll take more than a peer-reviewed scientific paper, to stop folks from behaving like pillocks!;)

Panic buying fueled by the media and not the seriousness of the virus.

Get panic buying at Christmas so what hope in these circumstances?

The media seem happy to stir things up to add to their circulation.

At least on here questionable comments are queried and pulled apart so there is some possible balance.

True it always amazes me at Christmas people buy food as if the shops are going to be closed for weeks afterward ! Some of the media reporting has been appalling .

Even some of what you’d expect to be more serious papers have gone down the hysteria route .

A new strain of coronavirus causing pneumonia-like symptoms was recently identified in Wuhan, China, marking the beginning of a spread of the virus across the globe.

Tuesday, Feb. 25: CDC has warned that disruptions to the U.S. from COVID-19 could be severe. The agency expects the disease to begin spreading at the community level in the U.S.

And "management" think we go off track! The papers, like NW really (it wasn't always like this but we are now tertiary interests - owner first, advertising sources of income and their expectations second, users third), depend on advertising and not honest news and open discussion. I am horrified at the headlines in some of the supposedly respected UK papers.

Expect Trump to sack CDC's head honcho tomorrow, then: we can't have truth getting in the way of profit now, can we? COVID-19 has us all in its sights --- scientists, nonscientists, politicos and non-politicos alike!

IMO, it's everyone's concern?

Italy have reported 239 new cases of coronavirus and 8 new deaths.

1,128 cases and 29 deaths.

I think part of the reason for the big increase might be to do with a huge amount of testing going on .

Some countries I suspect aren’t exactly going the whole hog to do tests.
