Lol

All soccer matches in French Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 will be played with a maximum 1,000 spectators until 15 April due to the coronavirus, the journalist Yohan Roblin from the French news channel LCI has reported.

They should probably do the same in the UK, albeit it won't affect Manchester City

No, what’s the point of the 1000 limit .

Just play the games behind closed doors and be done with it.

What idiot would go to a football match?  Probably plenty with no imagination. From the drop in footfall at a lot places a lot of people are quite reasonably making their own decisions from the information available

Anecdotal of course, but when i read that daily mail article about that guy in Wuhan and his account of the disease, i scrolled down to the comments and there were genuinely dozens of comments from people who were claiming they had suffered a mysterious illness around or just before Christmas that sounded remarkably similar. I also heard someone who called in to Radio 2 and described it and finally, my friend who I had no physical contact with, also suffered the same thing a few days later than me and it mirrored mine almost to the hour.

Strangely, I had one of the worst chest infections I've ever had over Christmas. Completely ruined the festive period for me.

What a pathetic decision by the government here. Truly insane . I despair .

Well the EU did say that the U.K. should take advantage of the slower spread of the virus.

That pretty much meant that the government would do the opposite.....

I despair at how this is being handled. Containment at this point is like trying to stop a wave with a dessert spoon.

The UK government can see what’s happening elsewhere so should have an advantage .  They certainly don’t want to make the same mistakes others have made!

As posted upthread I think this here virus is a couple of months older than we thought which probably means we had Covid-19, 0.1, here from the back end of last year?

The 'drift' it then underwent whilst spreading around Wuhan gave rise to Covid-19, 0.2. in Wuhan by mid December 2019?

Do some places, in the 'Developed World', already have some resilience against Covid-19 due to this 'lighter infection' we might have seen through December/Jan?

With several on here are saying they had Coronavirus like symptoms  last year what I don’t understand is why didn’t it spread at that time to any notable degree.  Or is it only people on this thread that were affected? It is only since the explosion of cases in China that the spread has happened.

Maybe it's the NW strain of COVID-19

a message from Abdu Sharkawy, an infectious diseases specialist in Ontario.

I'm a doctor and an Infectious Diseases Specialist. I've been at this for more than 20 years seeing sick patients on a daily basis. I have worked in inner city hospitals and in the poorest slums of Africa. HIV-AIDS, Hepatitis,TB, SARS, Measles, Shingles, Whooping cough, Diphtheria...there is little I haven't been exposed to in my profession. And with notable exception of SARS, very little has left me feeling vulnerable, overwhelmed or downright scared.

I am not scared of Covid-19. I am concerned about the implications of a novel infectious agent that has spread the world over and continues to find new footholds in different soil. I am rightly concerned for the welfare of those who are elderly, in frail health or disenfranchised who stand to suffer mostly, and disproportionately, at the hands of this new scourge. But I am not scared of Covid-19.

What I am scared about is the loss of reason and wave of fear that has induced the masses of society into a spellbinding spiral of panic, stockpiling obscene quantities of anything that could fill a bomb shelter adequately in a post-apocalyptic world. I am scared of the N95 masks that are stolen from hospitals and urgent care clinics where they are actually needed for front line healthcare providers and instead are being donned in airports, malls, and coffee lounges, perpetuating even more fear and suspicion of others. I am scared that our hospitals will be overwhelmed with anyone who thinks they " probably don't have it but may as well get checked out no matter what because you just never know..." and those with heart failure, emphysema, pneumonia and strokes will pay the price for overfilled ER waiting rooms with only so many doctors and nurses to assess.

I am scared that travel restrictions will become so far reaching that weddings will be canceled, graduations missed and family reunions will not materialize. And well, even that big party called the Olympic Games...that could be kyboshed too. Can you even
imagine?

I'm scared those same epidemic fears will limit trade, harm partnerships in multiple sectors, business and otherwise and ultimately culminate in a global recession.

But mostly, I'm scared about what message we are telling our kids when faced with a threat. Instead of reason, rationality, openmindedness and altruism, we are telling them to panic, be fearful, suspicious, reactionary and self-interested.

Covid-19 is nowhere near over. It will be coming to a city, a hospital, a friend, even a family member near you at some point. Expect it. Stop waiting to be surprised further. The fact is the virus itself will not likely do much harm when it arrives. But our own behaviors and "fight for yourself above all else" attitude could prove disastrous.

I implore you all. Temper fear with reason, panic with patience and uncertainty with education. We have an opportunity to learn a great deal about health hygiene and limiting the spread of innumerable transmissible diseases in our society. Let's meet this challenge together in the best spirit of compassion for others, patience, and above all, an unfailing effort to seek truth, facts and knowledge as opposed to conjecture, speculation and catastrophizing.

Facts not fear. Clean hands. Open hearts.
Our children will thank us for it.

i will just put this here...cheers

So you think it is a government decision that is ignoring the advice of the medical experts?

My own gut feeling more should be done.

That’s I think a rise of 65 which would be a slowdown but they normally have two updates each day .

So, c'mon CC what would you do? The government are NOT making these decisions lightly OR on their own. They will be solely acting on advice from medical experts. Maybe it is time for the govt to add some of the 'experts' in here to their advisory panel

The 'Placebo effect can be responsible for up to 1/3 rd of all 'healing' in the population.

Nobody knows 'how' it occurs just that if a figure deemed to be a potential and powerful  'Healer' (Dr/Priest/Faith Healer) gives you 'permission' to be healed then up to 1/3rd of those seeking 'aid' find it?

As we have seen at least 1/3 rd of UK population will 'do as bid' if they are told by 'Authority figures' (those the 1/3 rd 'deem' as 'authority figures'?) so why have we not utilised this potential 'miracle cure' yet? (or has someone already said owning over 24 loo rolls will spare you from Covid-19???)

This is all very interesting.  In South Korea there is a lot more testing going on, way in excess of anywhere else.  In that country the CFR is 0.7%, way lower than elsewhere.  This suggests to me that in countries where the CFR is much higher they aren't picking up the minor cases as they aren't being reported let alone tested.  Potentially reassuring.

If Iceland do screen the whole population in a few days that could be exceptionally helpful to epidemiologists. It could give the first clear indicator of any "buttressing" to case numbers, i.e what proportion of very mild, unrecognised, cases are circulating.
