Do not be surprised if we start to see more sabre rattling by various countries over the next few weeks/months.

This is going to cause a good deal of political upheaval. Populations in western democracies are not used to feeling threatened. Populations in totalitarian states are already resentful without something like this lighting the blue touch paper. Courtesy of 2008, there has been the inevitable rise of populist politics and a dwindling of tolerance to others. Iran is in a mess, Turkey had an attempted coup only 4 years ago, it is election year in the US.  Expect to see the likes of Russia, Nato, China, India and Pakistan increasing military exercises. Tis the 70/80's all over again.

Unfortunately now we don't have the great songs/bands of the 70/80's!

As has probably been posted elsewhere some things at Aldi are not selling quickly.  Shelves are better stocked than most Monday mornings.

Just to clarify about the 2 strains, it was only a suggestion based on the fact they saw the L strain in Wuhan. No comparison between the  2 strains has been performed so there is no evidence that one strain is more virulent than the other. It is almost impossible that this started before November outside of Wuhan.

What about late Sept/early Oct in Hubie?

Dr's were noting 'clusters' of pneumonia in late Nov/early December and raised the alarm then?

If it was out and about before Christmas in larger numbers than we thought then 'Christmas travel/return home'r's could have seeded certain areas of the UK prior to the arrival of the 'full monty' leaving some with 'partial immunity' having already had Covid-19 in December/Jan and written it off as a Cold/Flu??

For my part we had one 'At Risk' needing his inhalers and antibiotics/steroids for their 'dry cough/shortness of breath over Christmas whilst the other, as mentioned in early Jan ,left in an 'induced coma' from an 'unknown' infection leading to pneumonia'.....

I struck me as strange that the 'leading partners' with China did not see Covid-19 'early doors' via air travel to and fro for business?

Maybe we did?

Three British skiers have been hospitalized in Austria with coronavirus after contracting the most 'aggressive virus strain' in Italy

  • Group had been staying in Italy before going to a busy ski resorts in Saalbach
  • It is height of winter ski season and Saalbach is hosting Alpine Skiing World Cup
  • Dr Richard Greil described Italy's massive outbreak as 'completely out of control'
  • Widely speculated that Italy has stronger variant of virus - known as 'L' type

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8091313/British-skiers-hospitalized-Austria-coronavirus.html

May explain why it's so bad in Italy

Kinda a pointless lock down then really unless the onward country forceably puts them into a quarantine for 2 weeks, I mean it will help Italy but does nothing for the rest of us!

Anybody going through an airport can be tracked pretty easily within Italy and for those heading out, that's a benefit to the Italians since it exports the problem. The Italian government is the Italian government, not Brussels.

Apparently roads are running freely in and out of the "quarantined" regions too. It seems that the Italian version of a quarantine is very different to elsewhere.

Since nothing like this has been tried in decades within Europe it may take a few days to adequately decide what can be permitted and what cannot.

Anyone want to bet on how long it'll take before 'someone' invades Iran, afterall, everytime that the oil prices plummet some oil rich middle east country invades another, and low and behold oil prices race back up...   Plus Iran will probably be a real easy target right now what with all the government politicians becoming infected and some dying, there wouldn't be much in the way for coordination and I doubt their army is going to be 'magically free' from infection either.

Could be that the regime implodes and the people will finally get their country back. It's going to happen at some point anyway.

I don't think the housing market will come away from all that is going on unscathed. We have just been told a house viewing has been cancelled as the elderly lady does not want strangers walking round her house, which is totally understandable. She's considering taking the house off the market for the forseeable.

We can do it on the geographical fringes of the UK to the north, west and south west, our problem is from Manchester South where about 90% of the population live.

This is all very interesting.  In South Korea there is a lot more testing going on, way in excess of anywhere else.  In that country the CFR is 0.7%, way lower than elsewhere.  This suggests to me that in countries where the CFR is much higher they aren't picking up the minor cases as they aren't being reported let alone tested.  Potentially reassuring.

Unlikely to happen as the nice considerate guys seldom get to the top in such circumstances. On the whole you have to be pretty aggressive to be a leader.

South Korea is probably getting closer to the true picture.

Scotland is just a fringe part of the UK now?

Good luck testing the over 1 million who live in the UK's 4th largest city.

With several on here are saying they had Coronavirus like symptoms  last year what I don’t understand is why didn’t it spread at that time to any notable degree.  Or is it only people on this thread that were affected? It is only since the explosion of cases in China that the spread has happened.

Geographically yes and I say that as a fellow Scot. It's like arguing that Wales and the South West are not geographically on the fringe. About 80% of the population live in a diagonal strip from Liverpool to Brighton and Leeds to London.

I think the confusion is down to people having a different understanding to what the word fringe means. This is my understanding... that these "fringe" areas were some how less important than the 80% of the population South of Manchester.

"A pupil at a school in Warwickshire is self-isolating at home after being diagnosed with Covid-19.

The Rugby Free Secondary School said it had been given confirmation of the diagnosis by Public Health England (PHE) on Sunday.

The pupil had visited Italy over half-term and self-isolated for 14 days before returning to school, but then developed symptoms at the weekend"
