This was always my concern that a combination of their 'Wet Markets' and the Chinese New Year travel was a recipe for a rapid global outbreak..... but I was just a doom monger not talking plain common sense..... obviously....

Well, here we are but I won't say " I told you so!".....

Bit like the Express then. Bound to get one story right eventually.

Wow so much panic in here on a weather platform, the press are over cooking the severity of this, it not even as bad a the flu, 82% of cases are experiencing a mild cold, 14% more severe and experts suggest the number of cases reported are likely a 1000 x more. The normal groups of people who have other health issues are most at risk. In comparison over 1 billion people are effected by fly and up to 650,000 a year will die. Why are none of you worried about catching flu as the number of comparison effected are 82k is such a low percentage. Don't get sucked in to the panic. I was in AND Italy this week and there is plenty of food on the shelves and no panic!

Edit

I have re-read and also seen fujita's post and think i see what you meant by x1000. You are saying that numbers are actually x1000 those being reported?

I can understand WHO not wanting to apportion blame but to be blunt the virus started in China and has been attributed to the poor hygiene and to us westerners what we perceive as weird eating habits over there .

This is the second virus caused by China after SARS .  The virus didn’t just land from another planet on an alien space craft .

If it were a 'punt in the dark' it would be 'a stopped clock' but there have been warnings galore out there for the past 40 years (and over every single evolving crisis for H5N12/SARS/MERs/H1N1) but who 'cared' to take note?

I accept with a dying child I had more of an impetus to take note but what of the rest????

From the guardian

Surrey GP "is latest UK coronavirus infection"

Denis Campbell

A GP in Surrey is being taken to one of the UK’s six specialist centres for infectious diseases amid fears he is the latest British case of coronavirus, Denis Campbell, the Guardian’s health policy editor, reports.

The development is understood to have triggered an urgent investigation to see if any of his patients have the coronavirus too.

The case – which would be the 20th to emerge in the UK – has prompted particular concern among health officials trying to limit the spread of Covid-19.

The GP would routinely have seen scores of patients over the course of the last week before he became ill in the last 24 hours.

His diagnosis has yet to be publicly confirmed by Public Health England (PHE), NHS England or the Department of Health and Social Care. Public health chiefs are also worried by the unnamed doctor’s diagnosis because his wife is also a GP.

The economic impact is somewhat different from 2008. This isn’t a big banking problem it will be a drop in consumer demand but things should bounce back quickly after the virus subsides .

We do not actually know either of those two things as scientific fact Nick, that it started in China and that it was down to poor hygiene.

We do not even know what species the original host was.

About 1 in 5 humans are Chinese and China is the world 3rd largest country after Russia and Canada (and let's be honest, much of Russia/Canada is arctic wilderness) so if you are going to pick an originator country for a virus, the pecking order would be China first, followed by India, USA and Brazil.

SARS and this have been attributed to China by most experts  in that field . And if it didn’t start in China then why the explosion of cases over there before anywhere else.

Nor did HIV, Ebola, Ecoli bacterium, Plague, Famine etc, etc or CJS (I know that is not a virus but still relevant).

Instead of inciting a blame game with all the racial ramifications, international community should be investing in research, education and aid.

Iceland, New Zealand, Belarus, the Netherlands, and Lithuania have all reported first cases.

The death toll in Iran could be at least 210 which is well above the official figure of 34.

I think the west has a choice but one which it doesn’t want to make .

If you want to stop the spread then you’re going to have to take draconian measures.

And something that culturally most of us aren’t used to . I tend to think the vast majority of the public are quite sensible and would be quite understanding if say we saw some big changes to normal everyday life for a limited period .

If this helps to save lives then I think we should all be ready to do our bit.

In the grand scheme of things let’s say a month of many restrictions is a small price to pay .

I think you can build support for that if it’s done in the right way , you can get people on side .

Would think those who are being flooded might not agree.
