Coldest minima winter 2019-2020 season - recordings and thoughts

Don't rule out Shap, already at  -5.3C at 20:00. A few of the Scottish stations have risen from 19:00 to 20:00 as a slight easterly has picked up and disturbed the cold pooling, perhaps. Tulloch Bridge jumped from -6.2C to -3.2C.

Oh yes Shap - often the coldest spot in England especially when there might be a slight easterly or northerly drift as it is well sheltered.

Ah yes I see what you mean, sorry. For clarity, it looks like there were around 25 ground frosts with 15 of those being air frosts. Does that make more sense?

That sounds better, ground frost and air frost are measured by different thermometers, but I assume you knew that, so forgive me for posting such.

The winter months are December, January and February.

Please explain how a temperatures recorded in November, would be "the coldest temp recorded of winter 2019-2020"?

So forgetting how likely or unlikely it was, by your logic, if the lowest temperature of 2019 was recorded in October, or even August, you'd consider that the coldest temperature of the winter? What if the warmest temperature of the year was recorded in April, would that be the warmest temperature of the summer?

I would personally call it the 'Extended winter' and I believe that is a common term since I am not from a metreological background, not sure why you are arguing about it.Yes winter is December,January and February but as far as I am concerned November 2010 and 1985 ,March 2018,2013 and 1947 were winter for me!

Looking good for a possible new UK low for the "winter season" tonight. At 8pm, Benson -2.2C, Shobdon -2.2C, Shap -4.3C, Eskdalemuir -3.2C, Strathallan -4.0C, Tulloch Bridge -5.1C,

Temperatures dropped a stone as soon as the sun set this evening, a frost already by 5pm. Not sure we will break the current min though tonight, -9.9 degrees to beat.

Tyndrum hit -10C at 6AM I believe. Anything lowersince?

Edit. Sean Batty from STV weather also quoted the -10C at Tyndrum but I have not seen an official confirmation yet.

The previous -9.9C at Braemar was reported as-10C  a few times before being confirmed as -9.9C so just wondering if this could be similar.

Edit. The actual low was -9.7C.

Well Tulloch Bridge recorded -9.3C and is now over 2C colder than this time yesterday, with little wind and a lower dew point so -10 could still be on the cards there.  A few other Scottish locations are tracking colder but English sites are mostly warmer with maybe some in Yorkshire as an exception for now.

^ Aye, it's -5°C at Tulloch Bridge and it's only 4pm. -10°C tonight certainly seems possible.

3 amateur weather stations in Scotland hit -10c last night.

Inverey: -10.3c

Braemar: -9.7c

Feshiebridge: -9.6c

Closer to home my station in Keld, Yorkshire Dales fell to -7c for the 2nd time this month.

Inverey and Candacraig are already at -6c at 4.15pm.

I think Shap's -7.7C is a new low for the run into winter for England unless anyone knows better.
