I disagree. How many times has a maximum tempreture been set here? I live near here and can hardly recall one.

People are getting maximums confused with potential maxima. Sure, if Heathrow area clouds over and Cambridge remains sunny, it will record higher than Heathrow. However, Heathrow in sunny conditions has potential for the hottest tempreture achievable in the Uk due to latitude and postion.

If both areas are sunny, heathrow will win over Cambridge everytime. It is further south and has higher upper air off the contintent.

I think it's technically impossible to break 38c in the Cambridge area with current global warming.

I agree though if London area can sneak through the gap in clouds then it will probably be hotter than Cambridge later.

But that's what we are taking into consideration. Cloud heading towards London in the next 1-2hr but Cambridge remains clear, thus, higher temps.

Yes, this is the point i'm making. If Heathrow clouds over, then Cambridge may beat it...today. But I don't then think it would go on to set the all time UK maximum.

People can disagree, but it is too far north to achieve the most extreme of temps. It's Heathrow/Northolt/Kent if you are looking for 38.5c plus.

The max temp at Heathrow on August 10th 2003 was 37.3c, and it was 31.5c at 11am. Today it is 33.1 at 11am so 1.6c higher. If we apply this warming until 3pm today at the same rate as 2003, we would have a figure of 38.9c at heathrow.

Of course it's not an exact science, but should give us a ballpark figure.

I thought Heathrow got to 37.9c on 10th Aug 2003? Almost certain it did.

While everyone is enjoying 35°C, I haven't managed to make 30°C yet this year. That's the first time in 4 years.

Enjoying is a subjective term

I am however very much enjoying the knife edge anticipation for final highs of the day. From indoors. With fans. And ice.

Acording to the latest UKV, the cloud will not be widepread enough to stop the temperature rising high enough somewhere to break the record.

I will rephrase.

I think 38c is above the absolute limit achievable in 2019 for higher than London. Everything has a limit. In 30-40 years, you may see 38c plus in Cambridge or higher. but now? No.

Upper air thicknesses are even higher today than they were in 2003 - hence the 39c forecast.

A stupid thing to say....but it feels like an oven compared to yesterday. 33c here was hot, but going outside in 35c just feels insane this morning. It’s quite eerie.

Awesome scenic cloudless sky here with the temperature passing 32°C. Now to melt...

i think 40c is achievable North of London but extremely unlikely, but its more likely relative to normal given current conditions.

Well seeing as we are in 2019 perhaps Cambridge can exceed it this year

Wel its 34.5c there now, so its certainly not impossible we could see another 3.5c, especially as we are still advecting ever hotter air northwards and they are likely to remain sunny probably through to at least 4pm I'd say, so would only need an uplift of 1c per hour, something that has been comfortably achieved thus far (even taking into consideration heating should slow soon a little).

Showers in the channel still coming in, but they do look like they are weakening just like the first batch did, especially on the eastern side. I will look and compare what they look like compared with the last batch in a minute.

We'll see. If Heathrow has less than favourable conditions later, Cambridge may well beat it. Not disputing it. But if that happens, Cambridge will not set the UK all time record.

A very odd comment...It's like saying that 'with current global warming' wintertime snowfalls are technically impossible'...which is clearly not the case!

UKV has consistently had 38-39c in the Cambridge area for days leading up to this. I don't think saying it's impossible has any scientific backing.

I think we will fall short - I can see cloud arriving by 2-3pm which will really put a lid on things.

Currently 26c here on the West coast of Scotland which is very impressive for this time in the afternoon!

I do hope the UK temperature record is smashed today - purely from a extreme weather enthusiast’s perspective.

I seen this from Schafer’s early.
