North West Regional Discussion 30 Jan 2019 onwards

One of those days where you can gauge how far showers are away by their height above the horizon. Can see showers passing through the north Fylde. Clear skies from here to that shower train.

Amazing how fast the year goes these days. Summer has just flown by - it's felt like a really short summer this year - it's only really been summer from end of June until end of August this year. Whereas Summer 2018 really started in early May.

Doesn't feel that long ago since last October.

Always do quite well in today's setup with showers coming from the south west... well as in not having a drop of rain fall all day with quite lengthy sunny spells.  Far enough inland and sheltered with the long track over land including the mountains of cymru...most of the showers run out of puff by the time they reach here.  I'd hate it if it was cold enough for snow, but quite delighted in missing the rain today.

Yes.

What was most notable about today was the lack of diurnally driven convection- a sure sign that we are approaching the time of year where the sun is too weak to make much of a difference to temperatures if we were to get stuck under an inversion. We're at the point where the sun has the same potency as it would at the back end of February.

Nice fresh clearance from the north overnight..welcome reminder what clean, low polluted air feels like again.  Gone a bit cloudy now after a sunny start so just a reminder to keep the jumper handy when exposed to the keen breeze

It is been nippy as of late. Glad I had my bed back to thicker quilt ready for Winter.  Models suggests theres snow on the way for Friday evening? If this stays on by Thursday evening/night I'd be happy to see some early season surprise!

Lets be honest. Friday's weather for lowlands is cold rain. High ground some wet snow.

...and for quite some time too...a yellow warning for rain in place from 12:00 Fri to Midnight Sat...although I expect the track of the system will dictate which area's receive most of the 'cold' rain.  Large contrast of temperature for area's to the north of the rain band to those south of it.

Looking at the forecast and the early Met O advisory, I’d be more concerned about the potential rainfall  up here in the Pennines rather than a snow threat and TBH I’ll be surprised if we even see a flake of wet sleet.

happy to be proved wrong though.

From Friday onwards things taking a distinctly chillier feel - maximum temperatures really struggling to get into double figures as we start to feed in colder air - a bit unusual for October to have single figure maximum temperatures but not unheard of. However it's worth noting that we've had many a day around Christmas & January that's had higher maximum temperatures.

One of those set ups where the rain will almost be relentless, bit of uncertainty how far the northwards extent will be but no doubt we will see disruption from this. It will be interesting radar watching though too see how it all develops though.

Hopefully there won't be too much wind next week and we can have cold clear nights and chilly sunny ish days, too early for snow so lets hope for some frosty weather. Interestingly foggy weather seems very rare around here(even sea fog never seem to occur) so would not mind seeing the potential for fog to form especially with the ground being wet from the rainfall.

Think I just heard thunder but not certain as it didn't appear on Blitz. Was keeping an eye on some sferics in the Irish Sea before.

Rain had arrived and settled in here...was always going to be doomed when the warnings mentioned "particularly heavy on west facing hills"...hope it checks out early tomorrow but it could leave some flooding issues before it does
