This mild and wet spell seems very determined to last though, supported by a positive AO index over the coming days.

I hope we still get some sunny days, even on the east coast the weather is looking really bad over the next weekend (and probably next week too). Somehow when it isn't snow, the hills magically stop existing and rain comes pouring in from the west. Yet when it's snow, it's as if we have the Himalayas separating east from West Scotland 😂

Colder this evening than last night and very slippery - underfoot, Matron! There's a patch of grass I use as a short-cut between here and the high street usually a few times a day and that's still hard as concrete as it gets little sun.

Too much wistful talk of beasts from the east will be treated with disdain chez HC - last winter was even more forgetful than this one at home for snow, although the cold started a lot earlier, obviously. A good late winter northerly outbreak is what we want, although I know northerlies are desperately poor for most folks' snow prospects. The recent northerly spells haven't quite had the oomph they used to... God I'm getting old.

yes for all its lack of snow the car seems to have been permanently frosted over this winter. This winter may well go down as the heart break one.... On Sunday the young lad 5 years old got all his snow gear on and the snow shovel and declared he was building an igloo.... was barely shovelling dor 5 mins before the snow stopped and started to melt... he played in it and stockpiled it until it pretty much all melted about 2 hours later.  It does not take much for kids to have a ball in snow but ee cant even get the 3 or 4cm for a day that would satisfy them.

So lots of frost but no snow of note so still praying for the one big snowfall to let kids be kids and me join them 😁

Well, while that was a decent cauld spell for many, it was utterly pants snaw-wise for me here in the E. Borders.

Ye ken things are bad when you've nae snaw, yet even @101_North is daein a wee dance in some.

Anyway, when the last chance passed I went and booked another week in the Alps fir masel skiing. No way I'm ending this winter wioot another proper snaw fix. Totally broke now, but what the hell, you only live once.

Cauld and frosty this morning, then damp muck fir days tae come.

Widely -4C so thaw of lying snow stopped, at least temporarily. Just a bit of high cloud around and virtually windless going by the mainly static turbines.

A proper northerly can work well for a lot of people, the problem we have is that we get these two day topplers which are closer to a north-westerly than a northerly. The isobars may be almost straight up and down but the wind blows into an area of low pressure, not parallel along the isobars.

If we managed something slightly east of north you'd have a lot of happy folk down the east coast too.

For the sake of your sanity don't bother with the models for several days to a week.

How did that happen?

One minute you're planning a walk along the Forth at Blackness and the next minute you're at Stirling services...it's only 18 miles more to Callander!

Chance of snow on higher ground for the Lothians during the first hours of Thursday morning. GFS12 confirms, gfs p doesn't. Would be borderline in any case, and most likely just wet, heavy flakes mixed in with the rain on lower ground. Snow will only be possible in the case of very heavy precipitation, since uppers won't be particularly low: around -4C

Just worth keeping an eye on.

still the same thinking from me - get through this more Atlantic influenced spell - then a quietening down  with higher pressure developing (this could be the key) - then fingers crossed blocking gets into a good position and we can all get to take some snowy pics :oldgood:

-2c this morning with about 40% frozen snowcover and 20%sheet ice so nasty day for walking about .Slow thaw started late morning and we now have rain at 3.5c. So all in all another raw mid winters day.

It's off Mezzanine I think, can't remember which song now and I need my bed.

It's damp and getting a bit milder.
