Sea ice growth booming in recent days once again, and now up to 13.954 million km2, and above the maxima of 2015, 2017 and 2018.

No new records this time!

Seems like the colder then average conditions over the arctic at times this winter is helping the refreeze, a rare piece of good news. The question now is will be keep seeing the strong growth or willl we see an early maximum?

Seems like there is also a  strong chance that no one will have guessed correctly this year.

ie a finish value above 14.5 K Km2.

Or is it non PC to be optimistic?

It's definitely possible as 2012 shows. However with 2012 the extent declined dramatically following a good refreeze during the previous winter. Therefore we must be cautious as a warm summer or a deep storm can quickly undo all the good work.

It isn't non PC to be optimistic but it is realistic to be pessimistic as it will take an awful lot for the arctic sea ice to recover again. I reckon we would year 3-4 years of consecutive ideal summers and winters to see a really big recovery (pre-2007 levels).

The Feb peak has been beaten, with a value of 14.27 million km2 set on the 12th. Too early to call that the final maximum yet, but not long to go!
