Me too, supposed to have finished preparing next week's lecture by lunch time... ummmm.... does radar-watching count?!

Stop distracting me - I've got 8 mins and one slide left.....in summary.......don't get addicted to the weather. The end. That'll do.

Temp has dropped to 3.6c but is now holding steady. DP is exactly 0! Wind picking up from the East, but still some blue sky visible amongst the cloud cover.

Looking at the latest radar, I think the low forming off the coast of South Devon is holding up the advance of the snow towards Exeter and Bristol way.  The precip

is advancing up the channel at a far greater rate off knots.  It could be that the low pulls the precip off shore a little to come ashore again further along the Dorset coastline. This could well cause the front to pep up significantly as it comes inland this evening with a SE undercut.  @kold weather could well see a lot of snow and with a potential second sweet spot on the in Mid Surrey across to the Surrey E Sussex border.  These are developing things to watch in real time. I would expect the Met O Amber alerts to be issued later for somewhere from Mid Hants to E Sussex in a line.  Suffolk and Kent may well do slightly better than they are expecting if what I think is happening now turns out to be correct.

This could also explain why we are seeing snow on the beach in N Devon as winds begin to get pulled in from more of an ENE direction.

After a high of a lofty 2.8c we are on the way down @2.3c now

Expecting to be at zero by 430/5pm

Bit higher temperatures here, but importantly the dew points on the way down again which is good sign. 3C on the dot here.

Dave - I do hope so! The front is certainly pushing up at a faster clip than the models expected. EVen 12z ICON is quite some way off for example with the timing (its about 2hrs ahead!) which would give two hours of further penetration before the system shears to the east. Should mean a little more northward progress of the heaviest band of snow.

LP is moving due east at the moment.

I was surprised to see that Meteox radar has the band of snow coming in but quickly turning back to rain across most of the south.  01:00 friday

I've been sent a surprise pic of settling snow coming down hard and fast in coastal Cornwall!! By my friend who's at Penryn campus of Exeter University! Having told her to expect rain and sleet unlike all of us she hates snow I tell you what it bodes we for all of us if Atlantic Cornwall can achieve early afternoon day time settling snow! Add to this the NW snow radar shows rain over her area!

Never o'clock. Don't know what it is based on, but there is zero chance of the front getting that far north.

Edit: Well not zero, but highly unlikely given all the high res output.

Interestingly the front is moving faster than expected, even on the UKMO update at 14z on the radar (Is it a version of UKV, does anyone know?).

If this is the case, then that obviously is a good thing for those a little further north in this region for the heavier stuff.

Its certainly advancing up the channel faster than it is over Somerset and Wiltshire. Could cause the channel precip to intensify at it comes ashore with a cold SE undercut. I would expect that new low forming off Devon to position itself close to the IOW by 7-8 pm

Its even 30 minutes ahead of the UK met office radar update at 14z, and given that its clearly got more umphh behind it than the models were expecting at this stage in proceedings. Good signs for sure...

Temperature holding 2.9c here as cloud cover increases.

  • April 2024 - Was it that cold overall? A look at the statistics

General perception from many is that April was a cold month, but statistics would suggest otherwise, with the average temperature for the whole month coming in just above the 30 year average for the UK as a whole. A warm first half to to the month averaged out the cold second half. View the full blog here
