North West Regional thread 01/09/18 Onwards......

Recommended Posts

You got wet snow yet Chris? Radar says so, still sleety here but wet snow can't be far off even for an hour or so.

Plenty of snow showers on the cards tonight early tomorrow.

The issue with Cumbria is the huge elevation differences in extremely short areas of the county. You can walk a few miles or less and climb several hundred metres, when talking about snowfall that's the difference between heavy rain and a blizzard on occasions.

I'm back in from a bike ride through the city centre, up to Debdale and back home along the Fallowfield loop. My highest point was 77m according to Strava, more like 30m at home. It's raining everywhere, what differs is what's mixed in. Higher up, there are proper snow flakes,  lower down, more like sleet flakes. There's a thin slushy covering in places that the rain isn't warm enough to melt.

at least an hour for me of drizzle rather than rain. still a sleety mix here with snow in heavier bursts that are not sticking as too wet

She/he is in Ambleside so elevation could be anything from 47m to 80m in town centre or 100m in a few nearby enclaves.

Get up the kirkstone pass. It’s like five minutes in a car and there’s plenty of snow

Elevation dependent, summer blizzard, but here most of the morning - around three hours or so.

Heavy wet snow but not sticking. Hopefully will be soon though as an hour ago it was 1.6°C and now it has steadily dropped to 0.9°C.

Sticking in the town center

No not yet, still sleet. 2.0°C. Tonight is looking excellent and seems to be upgraded slightly on last few runs again.

Yes - Been there in it all and worn the T-shirt "microclimates" including bailing the tent out in Sunny Seatoller - Marra always unlucky for a (Coastal) Cumbrian

This point has been regularly made to Barmada Casten, however I think they only count snow that falls in the town centre as a proper snowfall. As someone who lived there a little while, that's a recipe for complete disaster.

Need to be very cautious.. but yes.

They don’t kick in until 3am, peaking at 6am and continuing until mid morning potentially.

The trajectory looks relatively narrow so some places could do very well, others less so. See the image...

This is a real test for this model - I will be extremely impressed if we wake up to snow tomorrow morning. 19013009_2906.gif
