Yes in an average year, late January - early February is the coldest period of the year. Also easterlies and northerlies are far more likely in February than December and January, as the atlantic traditionally quietens. The arctic is also still cooling along with SST's.

The saying 'as the days lengthen the cold strengthens' - certainly holds true.

Easterlies and northerlies still pack a very cold punch well into March as well - when they are more likely to surface.

Yup, there's definitely some great signalling coming off these model runs. So let's just keep tracking it, no point given up cos last one was a dud.

South Manchester shower has really intensified! Don’t know why.

hopefully something bubbles up out of nowhere overnight and surprises me in the morning - we've had the rain falling last night and now its cold enough it dries up, but it was so marginal it almost came off

These showers are sooo slow moving.

Somewhere is going to wake up to a surprise covering in the morning.

Same here in nearby Failsworth. Slushy dustings don't cut the mustard. I'm really optimistic we'll get a decent dumping or more before Winter is out. Background signals long term don't shout mild.
