I looked to see if v2.0 had moved Dec 2000 into the list (because that month got a larger downgrade than most others), not quite, the coldest five days were 27-31 Dec with -0.1, -1.2, -4.0, -3.3, +0.1 which is a pretty strong also-ran. Average of those would be -1.70 which is colder than Feb 2021. That one suffered from some upward moves but retained six days of negative means (it is now -0.2, -0.3, -0.1, -2.0, -0.3, -0.6 (average -0.58). The 2018 spell survived as five days too, despite some increases, with -0.1 on 26th Feb.

The legacy values for those five days in late Dec 2000 were +0.9, -0.2, -1.9, -0.8, +1.7 so the five days were dropped by 1.64 C on average.

Yesterday was our first subzero mean. The official mean hasn't yet been released, but the min was -5.1°C and the max 3.0°C, so -1.0°C or -1.1°C.

Could get a decent run out of this.

Four consecutive subzero means now (-1.1, -0.8, -0.5, -1.5). Could potentially get another six, thus giving a healthy run of ten days.

When was the last time we had a run like this? I'm guessing Dec 2010.. 10 days of sub zero means is quite noteworthy.

January 2013 had a run of eight days on both the legacy and current values. Before that you're looking at December 2010 for a longer run.

Just to reiterate what others have already said in the December CET thread, yesterday's mean was -2.0C, thus securing our five-day run (AFAIK the current values aren't subject to corrections).

Confused - we are now on 5 days then? Today will comfortably be a sixth day, and I expect tomorrow and quite possibly Thursday, which would make it a 7 day run. Friday looks like it will end the very cold spell.

There are 2 different sets of numbers being discussed

From Metoffice.gov

1) the means -

From 8/12   -1,1,   -0.8,   -0.5,   -1.4,   -1.9,  -2.3, and for the 14th     -2.5,

That makes 7 days up to and including Wednesday. It will be 8 including yesterday.

Remember that they enter a day behind, so data for the 15th will be recorded today.

2) the 'max' CET for the day -

From 8/12 it reads +3.0,  +3.5,   +3.2,  +0.7,   +0.1,    -0.4 and for the 14th +0.4....

The only 'possible' daily records were for the 'max'  for the day where the numbers were for the 15th (which will be available later today) and 16th, whose current values are +0.4C and -0.2C. It is thought they we may have beaten the +0.4C figure, but we will know later.

Well we were all caught on the blindside...!!!

Yesterday, the 15th,  recorded a minimum  CET of -9.3C , which was the lowest since records were calculated as they are today.  (since 1871). It beat the previous legacy and version 2 records of -8.4 and -8.3C respectively. The low maximum for the date was not beaten as it showed +0.5C. However,  the mean CET of -4.4C yesterday, extended the number of CET negative days to 8,

Impressive when considered in this context.

Not the best comparison to make, but another interesting statistic is the fact that this December's current mean minimum would place it fifth in the rankings. This, of course, won't last.

Re my post above (and thru Weather History's post of friday) from last week

This period (for December or earlier cold) has been one of the coldest we have seen for a 10 day period  in the CET history.

3) 9th - 26th Dev 1890    mean temp -2.14C

4) 8th - 17th Dec 2022     mean temp -1.88C.
