It is ridiculous how some people immediately throw in the towel if they don't see anything in a situation, where it is showers, which by their nature are random and could fall anywhere!

This is a very cold spell for the time of year, there are homeless people dying of cold on the streets and people are trying to say that "This isn't a true cold spell"... Come on!!!

i must admit that it was so sunny today that i was dubious about tonight, i was wrong.

Just put the bins out in Central Peterborough, and there is about 1.5 inches on the ground and snowing heavily.   Looks like the potent shower in the Wash that was heading this way has weakened slightly - still tonights fall is about the most we've had here all winter.

The showers are really beefing up in the North Sea and the Thames Estuary area, as well as The Wash doing it's job nicely... I really do feel that the MetOffice will upgrade parts of our region very soon if they haven't done already.

Two things I've noticed in the last few minutes.

1. There's a lot more activity in the southern North Sea that any time today

2. There's more of an ENE movement

Both things should be good for this region I would say. Game on!

Its amazing to watch the sky turn from bright orange to almost, dark navy when the skies clear. It now looks seriously cold with the anow cover.

Noticed that the met office now predict heavy snow tomorrow morning and afternoon for Peterborough. Updated just a minute ago.

Here is the little fella

So the winds might veer north easterly or even northerly towards the west of the region for a time, then we will see that feature move westwards, this looks to organise areas of showers and push them west, esepcially through the north of the region. This shallow low approaching is probably the reason why we are seeing some pretty potent showers appearing along the coast now.

So judging by this, the showers should become heavier and more organised and again the risk of thunder couldn't be ruled out.

As for overnight lows, probably -4C to -6C widely but lower in any clearer spots (Herts probably favoured for the lowest minima).

I thought it couldn't be too long before they realised the potential for heavy snow tonight. I would expect warning to be upgraded again soon.

Curse me for being in the south of Peterborough, just a dusting whilst a couple of miles up the road has a couple of inches already.

Yep same here. And not looking good for anything tonight either. Even with the better synoptics and upper low we still struggle.

Wow!! That's a great photo of a shower cloud over London this afternoon. I expect you were under it @Daniel* ? Shame we're not still in the same thread!

Don't worry :) It's all quiet here now and it looks as though the next band of showers will miss Peterborough and hit further north, so Market Deeping or Stamford way.

Yep, sounds about right.  I'm measuring -6.5c currently. I suspect the temperature will start to rise soon as the winds pick up.

Thanks Ice Day.

-7.2 just need the snow now.

just outside tonight' s warning zone

1-3 cm possible so these showers look like being much heavier than today's and more frequent coming from the east

Lots more fun to come from the looks of the latest Dutch radar. Here is a link to that, plusa page where you can check the historical radar (to compare how things looked yesterday to today etc.):

and the historical one:

Looking at the radar - looks like the winds are changing more easterly - as the showers that were hitting Peterborough from the Wash are now going to our north

Do you think we will get any snow showers (Herts / Essex) before midnight?
