I mentioned earlier it looked like it was orientating to the North and East of the SW. Good for points North and East of me as some of it could get very heavy. For us and SW patchy snow gradually dying out later.

The sad thing is it is the fat (technical term) flake variety of snow we missing out on I would have liked to have seen that.

Maybe we can clip a little heavier ppn before it all moves northwards.

SOME PICS + FREEZING RAIN BACK TO SNOW WATCH FOR ALL OUR COASTAL MEMBERS

......................

THE GREAT FREEZING RAIN DEBATE AND AN APPEAL FOR A FREEZING RAIN WATCH AND A POSSIBLE CHANGE BACK TO SNOW PREDICTOR:

............................

Hi BB1962-63.  Yes the definition of freezing rain does seem a bit nebulous.  My opinion of true freezing rain, probably cos it was the definition i heard first when young,  is super-cooled rain droplets, it may start life as either snow or rain but by the time it reaches the ground it is liquid and well below freezing.  It is to my mind also by far the worse kind (not that the other forms are much better) as this is the form that can freeze instantaneously, even on non sub zero surfaces.  My experience of this back in the 80's was the "pimpled" sheet ice it left in it's wake which made walking, let alone driving on it impossible.  Here in Exeter last night seems to have been pretty similar to what you had in Exmouth, @Thundery wintry showers has already given some good details and i suspect here it was mainly a mix of sleet/ice pellets freezing on contact with sub zero surfaces - not that i was going to venture out to check.  Sounds like the IOW may have had some of the proper stuff.  Someone asked last night about a blizzard of freezing rain and i mentioned it is called an ice storm, if anyone is interested check out the Quebec 1998 ice storm on the web, footage of the destruction it did to the power grid is astonishing!

A word of warning in regards to our less intense affair and the possibility of more of the same over the next few days - If you are venturing out to enjoy the snow and have had freezing rain then please be aware trees may be holding surprisingly large amounts of ice.  If branches are weak, then they may be prone to falling due to the extra weight so be aware, as you would be in strong winds, if you are walking playing near trees/woods.
