The Midlands Regional Weather Discussion 19/01/2018 Onwards

Recommended Posts

Just like to say hello to all my fellow Midlanders. I am new to Netweather. I hope that the predicted 'polar low' will be further south then currently forecast. I must admit I was really disappointed to see the Amber warning cancelled here. Just a case of looking at the radar I

I believe the wind direction is likely to shift from a North Easterly to more of a Easterly; this will change distribution.

Just as the Polar Low approaches so it misses here probably.

Considering you're probably the best placed in the midlands for tomorrows PL snow, you should be a bit chirpier..

I did see some graupel today, though it was verly light/light.

This season to date I have seen 17 days of snowfall, with 15 days of settling snow. The total accumulated snowfall is somewhere in the region of 25-30cm, though I'm not 100% sure.
In terms of frost we have seen 18 days of frost, with 14 days of ground and air frost.
How does that compare to 2016/17?
Well at the moment we have improved on last years snow total of 10 days, but surprisingly we are still approx 14 days short of frosts.

This ere' Polar Low, is now gonna miss the East Midlands, especially the more South Eastern parts Inc South Notts, Leicester, Northampton, etc, and Sheffield, Barnsley, Rotherham, Scunthorpe, could get battered..... Hope it gets a slight southerly knock on the next runs.....

Fingers crossed! We can also hope for a larger, heavier band of precip to also increase our chances.

A little kick to a more direct easterly would do me just now. Although I guess that could affect the streamer as the fetch will be shorter

I think if you want the streamer currently in the East Mids, then a change of wind to an easterly would be preferable, however, if you would rather have a chance of seeing that polar low then a north/north easterly would be preferable. I personally would rather have the chance of seeing the low push further south.

Hmmm...not sure polar lows are any better than being under streams of showers seeing how quick they move going by my experience of them. Polar lows produce a lot of snow but can be gone too quickly. Still good for a quick centimetre or three though!

Although when I was living up in Sunderland, we got a polar low that then dragged down a stream of snow showers behind it...Jan/Feb 2004 I think it was.We got well over a foot of snow right on the coast there anyway!

i'm in the east midlands (northampton) but only very light flurries, nothing to really get excited about unfortunately.  just wish we could have 30 mins of decently moderate snow thats all i ask.

How heavy, we've got some here, but it is very light, like what we have been seeing for most of the day.

Light snow just started falling here near Banbury.

The radar is looking good for some heavier falls later tonight.
