The Midlands Regional Weather Discussion 19/01/2018 Onwards

Recommended Posts

Nobody from Nottingham posting and with good reason, not a flake to be seen. We have definitely missed out on the heavier stuff when it’s been forecast...

I was really hoping to see some large flakes and it booting it down before I head off to bed, haven’t the energy for a night of lamp post watching! :sorry:

Cold weather further into spring can be good. Not much chance of snow settling for long (if at all) but convection is greater so you can get some really heavy snow showers. Cool to watch.

Using the West Midlands one as an example, but the Met Offhce mentioned outbreaks of sleet and snow across all areas, possibly giving further accumulations is places. And yet, a number of us have had a few cm plus of accumulations, including some of those in the East Midlands. So it does seem as though the Met Office are under-estimating this event.

Why drive when you can just get the laptop out lol?

I can , but as i didnt go in today i feel a tad guilty when others did.  Also hate being stuck in all day working - dunno how people do it - sends me stir crazy .

And yes Im in the 'hate snow when it affects travel' party

Thought Nottingham was pasted by a streamer the other night.

Talking of the radar

The next batch coming into the south coast has nearly caught up with the tail-end of our sgtalling trough!

Is it snow on the south coast?

Off to the Centra Southern England thread I go....

It was we done very well out of it that night and the day/s before best snow for 15-20 years at least. Obviously people wanted more tonight but we never do well when it's warm vs cold air....has to be pretty much a straight easterly aimed towards us to make things happen.

I'm not fussed about tonight....happy for a quick thaw now. This week will live long in the memory.

Ah I see the Prozac has kicked in.

Just hoping to salvage something from this cold spell. Finally got some brighter radar returns over here and the wind is making it look like a mini blizzard. Several hours of this and I might manage a covering.

The models suggested it would go a bit further West than it is currently. Maybe it could come Northwards after all

It's freezing rain on the south coast according to XCweather though but would be snow in the Midlands if it made it that far.

This is becoming an epic snow event in my part of Northants, the snow drifts on the roads today I haven't seen since the 80's, after tonight's snow most roads must be blocked!

Report back...

It has just gone above zero on the South coast (now rain/sleet after a short burst of snow), but is snow inland at the moment..

It sounds as it is quite heavy so could be another event if it comes our way.

I think my local weather station (Monkspath) is having one of its funny turns tonight, it's been showing the exact same temperature (-1.9°C) for almost four hours now! :fool:

Yh Met say possible snow tomoz night now also. We currently have very heavy snow approaching 14cms. Drifts not far of my window. And totally agree Met really should have put an Amber alert for West Mids this is now as bad as December with more still to come.

Putting the snow and freezing temperatures aside for a moment, how long have these high winds been blowing for?  Feels like we've had them for over 40 hours now, that must be pretty unprecedented.
