Can you believe it the radar has shown a shower split in two and leave a gap and Leicester and Hinckley are in the gap! Did say I would give in to my optimism by 11am and i have! Lol #bigfreeze #whatsallthefussabout

Some in land convection looking at the radar? The strength of the sun is probably helping here.

Yep  showers are getting stronger as they progress over land   some might get lucky

Melts even with sub zero ground and air and full cloud cover. Ridiculous.

Need to ask an expert on here why it does that.

Well feels warm out there today actually with no wind, watch out when those proper stronger easterlies come in,not had then strong at all yet.

Not enough snow cover to bounce solar radiation so its absorbed rather than reflected

it's just typical of our region.  we get extreme cold temperatures and it hardly snows at all.  Then at other times we have temperatures just above freezing but lots of snow....which then promptly melts within a few hours.  we can't win in Northamptonshire.  This 'epic' period is a real let down for this region.  I have seen much better 'snow' events in much milder conditions.

It is snowing pretty hard here at the moment, very dry and powdery snow.

When we had a snowy day a few weeks ago how come, here in Stoke, it only stuck on trees, bushes, hedges & the winter flowers coming through in flower beds? None stuck on grass. Can't remember seeing that before.

Can someone please tell me why the snow is melting when the temperature here is 0 or below. Am I missing something

Strange how quickly we have progressed from flat grey light.

Now we are seeing large convective clouds with frequent snow flurries.

I am quite hopeful for more developments from the larger showers still over the East Midlands.

The wind is rapidly veering to the East so it is quite difficult to see where the will land.

MIA

Edit - sorry about the space bar - It is packing up in the cold weather!!

It's ridiculous that snow is abiding by the same laws of physics the rest of the universe has for the past several billion years ? okay then :D

In other news, it was pretty funny watching heavy snow showers pass north and south of Leicester. Back to same old Leicester

It’s ridiculous that dry snow melts on frozen ground with no extra heat and low levels of solar radiation. People say it's the strength of the sun, but lower latitudes don't seem to have this issue.

Well, i'm sorry you don't like the way the world works. If I could make snow fall at 10c, I would!

Its no surprise snow is melting. Sun is actually pretty strong. surfaces soak up the heat. snow falls, covers and then melts as thermal feedback from the ground releases the latent heat prior to the snow cover

Is it 10 degrees out there? Funny, it says it sub zero. Maybe drop the attitude.
