Very biased and mostly off topic mad thread again tonight.

Feel like sticking a post in again because nobody else seems to be doing anything about it.

Got for it they will either read it then delete it or not bother then delete it nothing to lose only thumb exhaustion

Next area of interest is Thursday night into Friday, coastal snow showers. What you reckon Chris? I have hope :good:

I think it’s looks really good. Most importantly winds aren’t going to be too strong which ruined it for us the last few times. If that doesn’t deliver then Monday might anyway.

Judging by those charts a streamer could setup right over the both of us, I think we deserve a change of fortune TBH :good:

I still don’t understand why we needed to be ‘warned’ about today.

I think the MO need to raise the threshold for warnings.

Yes indeed. The only similar set up this winter was on the 8th of December. I think the 850s were slightly warmer then and we had 40 mph winds and the sea was 2° warmer. We should be getting buried in this sort of set up. I just wish there was some precipitation around tonight, could’ve been good as well.

Yes agree, conditions look better this time around and I'm keeping a close eye on Friday. Could be one of those VERY rare occasions were we are actually in the best spot.

Here's a debatable question: (now that this is not my opinion for or against this is just a question to ponder)

Has today's setup happened 30 years ago, would it have delivered the goods (ie a fair covering, and snow start to finish)?

Let's not forget we did not expect it to turn marginal, and the conditions seemed right for it to remain as snow. It cannot be forgotten that for all the long periods of mainly light snow, it did actually turn to rain in the end by the coast.

I tend to think it would. Certainly similar events in the past seemed to deliver proper snowfall. Or maybe the block would have been a lot stronger in previous years? I sometimes wonder whether 2010 would have rivalled 1947 if it had happened 30 years ago.

Don't think it would make a difference as there was no influence from the Irish Sea regarding wind as there was virtually no wind to speak of and any breezes were off shore from what I could see so it was all down to upper air temperatures and intensity of the PPN which for here and Cumbria were all the right side of marginal. I was very fortunate because it seems going by the reports 15 to 20 miles further southwards the PPN was not as heavy as it was here at times therefore struggling too settle as a result, even up here you could see the snow struggling to accumulate at times and no doubt we would of got more if temps were a fraction cooler.

I do agree with those if there was more in the way of clear skies the temp and dew points would be a bit lower therefore ground temps may of ended up being a bit colder also but it really was all down to luck in this set up and imo if this set up occurred 30 years ago, the results would be the same.

6 hours or so of continuous light snow, gave about 4cm level cover, nothing special, but it was good to see. There was a rapid thaw once it stopped but only from some surfaces and roads, many have held the snow, all grass surfaces have, so we have had our first full day with a decent snow cover on the ground of the season. The last 2 snowfalls or similiar amount quickly melted, but we have a very cold night in the offing, and the snow will take until Thursday to clear, tomorrow looks a very cold one, with the surface cold embedded.

Its been quite some time that we had a frontal feature from the west bring snow throughout, the last two on 29 Dec and 21 Jan turned to rain; indeed probably have to go all the way back to winter 12/13 the last time this happened. The front on the 16 Jan 2016 brought heavier snow but it was much wetter and it did turn sleety.

However, shame the precipitation was so light, it could have been 6 inches instead, alas there was no evaporative cooling at play, as the front was weakening all the time. Still hopeful we get 6 inches before the winter is out - and I include March as winter.
