Fantastic weather over the past two days, one of my favorite types. Frequent, heavy thundery showers.

One of the pros of living in the fens is the beautiful wide sky!

I love that shot of the passing shower with the view of multiple cells firing up in the background :)

Just heading off out with the hound for an evening walk across the fields, when I looked up and saw this convective beauty over towards the Chester area... Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but look at those mammatus clouds! :D

Didn't start till quite late today but there were some rumbles from distant storms over the hills to our north and northeast. Before these occurred the structure of the cumulonimbus clouds looked very good with well formed anvils.

I saw one powerful looking cloud to ground strike in the distance which produced cannon sounding thunder, and then a period of very heavy rain passed over later on before giving one close rumble of thunder as it moved away.

Sferics exploded recently to the west and south west of me in Wales, also to my north over Cumbria. Heading in my general direction, could be an interesting evening.

What the hell! How did the sferics get to Manchester and bypass me. Really annoying when that happens.

I saw my first bolt in 362 days.  A great big long inter-cloud jobby, immediately after 'merging' onto Mancunian Way. It felt apocalyptic. It was also quite gusty 5 minutes before when I was heading up upper brook st. Hope became reality

Day 1 Convective Outlook

VALID 06:00 UTC Mon 11 Sep 2017 - 05:59 UTC Tue 12 Sep 2017

ISSUED 04:19 UTC Mon 11 Sep 2017

ISSUED BY: Dan

Upper trough gradually moving eastwards across the British Isles on Monday will lead to fairly widespread showers, some perhaps weakly-electrified given marginal instability and steep mid-level lapse rates. A low-end SLGT has been issued for Yorkshire / Lincolnshire and East Anglia, but some uncertainty as to how widespread showers will be here. In general, quite dry air aloft may limit the true convective depth somewhat, and hence limits the lightning potential - despite showers being capable of producing heavy downpours and some hail.

Should be some nice convective cloudscapes today in the cool and clear Pm flow, cameras at the ready. Netweather convective / storm forecast:

Storm & Convective Forecast

Day 1 Convective / Storm Forecast

Synopsis

Upper low and collocated surface low close to NE Scotland will move out into the N Sea toward Norway today. An unstable, cool and showery Polar maritime NWly flow covers the UK.

... ENGLAND and WALES ...

Pool of cold mid-level temperatures associated with upper low will cover the UK, creating steep low to mid-level lapse rates and supporting numerous scattered showers today across the UK. Surface heating will allow convective clouds to attain sufficient height for thunderstorms to develop later this morning and through the afternoon ... these mostly across England and Wales - where temperatures, moisture and forcing will be greatest. Thunderstorms likely most numerous across central, northern England and eastern England. Vertical shear will be weak, so showers/storms will be disorganised short-lived pulse-type convection. Any showers/storms may produce hail, localised minor surface water flooding and strong wind gusts.

Time is running out here. About 3 hours until the risk moves away inland.

Next risk Wednesday with an even colder cold pool.
