Right,so it was weak high pressure then, not sure what that legend represents then, that looks like the anomaly.

Feb-Mar is an interesting time for temperature records in the UK; every week the day length increases by nearly half an hour in the south and more than that in the north, which means the potential maximums increase at a considerable rate. While they're generally in the mid-high teens for mid-late Feb, by mid-March they're in the mid-20s!

So every week - or even few days - earlier that a monthly record is set, the more impressive it is. Makes the Feb 1998 records all the more impressive; almost 20*C on 13th of the month and without a foehn wind involved really is sensational. The same conditions a week later probably would have topped 20*C, and a week after that got somewhere close to 22*C.

For fun, just imagine if the southeast had a mountain range aligned west-east... the Feb record would probably be in the mid-20s .

Sometimes I forget just how much the moisture and latent release potential offered by ocean waters comes into deep cyclogenesis; without recalling the restrictions of being well inland, a 972 mb low formation barely registers on my consciousness!

Proximity to the Rockies should make for some unusually strong flow interactions with the eastern flanks of the mountainous terrain (usually it's the west side bearing the brunt of any such deep lows as they roll in off the Pacific).
