It's felt very bitter outside today with the wind chill. I haven't felt this cold outside for a long time. The sort of cold that really bites into your hands. No snow of course but interesting nevertheless and is certainly characteristic of true Winter weather.

for the large teapot maybe, but upto 18 years ago, true beasts were not uncommon, -12 uppers, -4 maximums, -15 windchill, that's real winter, but not to be seen again

Up to 18 years ago. I don't remember any such conditions in 1999. There may have been the very rare occasion when conditions were as you describe earlier, but there would have been far more times when it would have been much more similar to today. I too remember the occasional time in the 90s when it would have been colder than today, but not that regularly. I think you suffer a bit from rose tinted glasses syndrome and equate these memories as been more the norm than they really were. Why do you have such high praise for the Winters of the 90s? Everybody knows they were nothing special except for say 1990/91 and 1995/96 (and the later was nothing spectacular here). If you were referring to the 60s or the 80s fair enough. But the 2010s (though admittedly been dire since 2013) has already given us cold spells in November, December, January and March that would hands down beat anything the 90s had to offer us. The only exception been anything thus far for the month of February, which admittedly Feb 91 was colder and snowier than any February thus far this decade. But the only February which came anywhere near close in the 90s afterwards was Feb 96, and even then not too close. Unless of course you come from some alternate reality where the Winters of the 90s were colder and snowier than this one.
