What an amazing few years this was! 2009/2010 were the best years of my life for snow, and will take some beating.

I was fortunate enough to witness December 1981 which in this area was colder [average -1 deg][local met office data] had more snow and unlike December 2010 had enormous drifts !

December 2010 was an exceptional month by recent standards. The depth of cold was notable, local rivers started to freeze on the 8/9, there was a thaw 10-14 before the cold came back with avengence and we endured our coldest spell probably since Jan 87, with 9 days with a mean at or below 0 degrees (18-26 Dec), the river Kent froze over in the centre of Kendal for the first time since winter 81/82 I think. It wasn't as snowy as Dec 2009, indeed snowfall amounts in the Lake District were small overall, certainly no 1 ft falls or drifting, just a few inches.

Hope we see a swift return to winters such as 09/10 and 10/11 in the not too distant future, 2 of the last 3 have been horrendous in terms of amount of wind and rain.

Yes I thought we would never see snow and frost  again on that scale Most ironic event in December 2010 for us was the breakdown of our 48 year old chest freezer. All we had to do was box up the contents place outside in -7c averge temperature and wait for a new one to be delivered about 4 days later.( well done John Lewis). Had to roll the old one out on logs as it was so heavy and remove a few doors to take the new one in.Real good timing and nothing thawed at all!!

There's some from this winter in my gallery here.

At the time it was all a bit of a blur and I wish I'd taken more.
Short days and poor light made it more difficult than you'd think and travelling any distance was inadvisable.

I have nothing to add apart from snow turning to rain and washing away the few inches that had fallen. December 2010 was bitterly disappointing here.
