Here we are then, the end of January.

In review.

Highest Temperature: Something in the teens.

Lowest Temperature: Think I missed it.

Amount of sunshine: Saw more of the other stars at night.

Greatest Snow Depth: Whatever can be scraped from the bottom of a barrel.

Score out of ten: How do you type small fractions in this font?

January review :

Air frosts : 2

Number of days with falling snow  (proper snow NOT almost completely melted slush) : NIL

Lying snow days : NIL

Wet days : Too many

Cloudy days : Too many

Mild days : Too many

Summary : Not as ridiculously mild or as gloomy as December 2015 was, but as a winter month, another wretched fail. 0.5/10

Think about all that lovely WAA if we had a nice easterly fetch now. Doesn't bear thinking about.

FI cold again although we may actually see a few flakes this week. Otherwise no sign of a more prolonged cold snap.

Must admit; I'm getting model fatigue now. Think I preferred the old days when I didn't even know what the GFS was. I would read the five day forecast and if something wintery popped up it usually happened - no wild goose chase.

Actually looking forward to warmth and light now. Wind and rain is good for nothing!

Honestly thought we would see at least a week or two of cold weather with snow on the ground. Well the cloaks ticking for this winter and I cannot see any wintry weather in sight from the models for the next couple of weeks.

I'm sure I read somewhere, we in the uk would experience colder winters from the period 2018 until 2030 or was I dreaming!! until them I'm hibernating :-/

Oh for Christ's sake if anyone uses the word 'potential' in the next 24hrs in the MOD thread they should be banned from posting for a week.

Ditto 'Day 10'...I'm so tired of day 10 being some sort of nirvana but it never getting any closer. Day 11 and day 9 are fine...I'd just like to pretend day 10 doesn't exist :D

Just looking through the archives at February 2004 which brought a good snow event at the tail end, there is hope:

archives-2004-2-1-12-0.png archives-2004-2-8-12-0.png archives-2004-2-15-12-0.png archives-2004-2-20-12-0.png archives-2004-2-25-12-0.png

Cold northwesterly by the 07th, easterly with snow flurries here 19th-22nd, then the proper cold from the north from the 24th with snowfall on the 26th/27th. Of course, it can be seen how high pressure forces upwards and effectively brakes this side of the vortex. Every attempt at that so far this winter has failed miserably. Do have fond memories of that cold spell in Feb 2004 though, I think the fact it came from the north just had the edge over 2005 and 2006.
