It can be -4c on the ground but way up in the sky, the air temperature needs to be below sub zero, hence upper air temperature. if its mild in the sky then any precipitation will fall as rain, and freeze on the ground.  I typed that fast i hope you get what i mean?

To be honest I still think it looks good for you mate. Leicester could be in a good position tonight and Melton Mowbray even better. Oxford though, about 20% of anything settling i'd say :(

This front marks the end of the cold spell now really for me. Pathetic.

I think so, maybe a frost in the week but chances it could by cloudy, may as well have 13C temps back now

Nothing but light drizzle here. After such a good air frost last night I thought it may snow tonight. Looks like I'm too far west here though.

Absolutely atrocious, it really is. It's the middle of January and cold air gives us rain. Absolute joke. The quicker that move to Buffalo comes about, the better.

Such a dire hole for snow this country, I mean the radar today is just a complete jaffa cakestake.

My colleague at work who had to travel down from Liverpool said it was snowing there. I asked if it was settling and she said a bit. Still better than here right now. Maybe later though.

What gets me is that we were originally forecast a very cold, clear and sparkling night. To lose this to a murky, chilly and damp night feels like a double insult.

Lets hope something comes along later in the winter to lift our spirits. A 3rd year running of rubbish like this is really starting to test my interest in the weather.

yes, before 2000, winter used to be my favourite season, not nowadays cold spells are farty, this one only half hearted, no scandinavia high, no greenie high, no real cold uppers, so best at low levels is a smattering

think my favourite season now is summer

Indeed, that hot week with the cracking Friday night storms during the first week of July was the standout highlight of 2015! I'm getting to like Spring simply because anything is possible during those months. Also love seeing the first real warm weather convection!

I think we get our best weather in Spring!  We always tend to get our 2 week summer in April!!

Just in from walking the dogs - raining quite heavy. Feels nowhere near cold enough. Fed up of this rain every evening. Seems really difficult to get snow in these last few winters.

yes, true cold spells with a greenie high/scandinavia high getting rare
