Anemometer question

Recommended Posts

Looking to buy a handheld anemometer.  Seen some on eBay for about £10-£20 but the ones that look good only go up to 70MPH in recording.

So with that in mind, what do you recommend as a measurement that will not burst the bank or be too fiddly when operating a device?  What are your recommendations on these for wind measuring compared to cheaper models?

Any ideas?

Munro do a  hand held anemometer which is good, accurate and reliable but perhaps too expensive at around £260.

Digitalmeters do a rotating cup anemometer for £50 which, according to the technical spec' is reasonably accurate and will record speeds of up to 125 mph although the start up speed is 3 mph so it won't record very low speeds.

There are many rotating impeller type hand helds ( Kestrel for example ) which would suit your needs and these range from about £40 to upwards of £200, the more expensive ones coming with a variety of other functions. The disadvantage of these in use is that you have to face the wind which, in heavy rain or snow in a gale, is a very uncomfortable experience. The rotating cup type hand helds can be held at right angles to the wind so you're not getting blasted in the face while recording.

You could go this route instead:

Max wind speed depends on phone model, but have recorded speeds upto 68mph with one - though your arm will soon tire of holding it above your head at those speeds!
