Any record of how much fell?

From Ogimet, the wettest  synop station I can see was Luedenscheid:

    114.4mm in 24 hours
    114.0 in 12 hours
    45.0 in 3 hours

    But...

The 12h total reported at 0600 on the 14th. is 30.0mm
The 12h total reported at 1800 on the 14th. is 114.0mm.

I make that 144mm  rain in one 24h period and that's unlikely to have been the wettest spot. And here was me complaining about my 51mm on Monday.

So how does this compare with floods affecting Tintagel 2004 and Lynmouth 1952 and 2014?

Really puts our own sad mundane little life in perspective. Well I hope that it would.

It's just appalling - I suspect there are comparisons of sorts but this is on a much bigger scale.

I just hope something similar doesn't happen on the Severn, the Trent or the Thames one day.....

    Here's something interesting:

All of that flood water is being tracked, and it's heading to the Netherlands.

It already has.   July 2007 saw most of the upper Thames valley under water with many villages and farms flooded.   Brice Norton recorded a record 24 hour rainfall total that still stands.  This is a quote from the Wikipedia article on the floods of 2007….

“On 20 July, another active frontal system moved across Southern England. Many places recorded a month's rainfall or more in one day. The Met Office at RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire reported 4.98 inches (126.6 mm): a sixth of its annual rainfall. The college at Pershore in Worcestershire reported 5.60 inches (142.2 mm),[14] causing the Environment Agency to issue 16 further severe flood warnings.[15] By 21 July, many towns and villages were flooded, with Gloucestershire, Worcestershire, Warwickshire, Wiltshire, Oxfordshire, Berkshire, London and South Wales facing the brunt of the heavy rainfall.”

These events are sadly going to become more commonplace and more widespread as our global climate changes.

Calm start to the week, but Autumn Equinox ushers in gales for the north later in the week

High pressure builds in across the south first half of this week, bringing fine & dry weather for most. But from mid-week, a strong jet stream arriving will introduce windier and more unsettled conditions in the north, with risk of gales Thursday. Read the full update here
