I always thought colour effects like that were called iridescence.

Nup, very different from nacreous (or mother of pearl) cloud 

 

I've seen them a couple of times and they are spellbinding. They have an intensity of colour and brightness that puts anything else in the 3rd division. Also, I've never yet seen a photo that does them justice.

I saw nacreous clouds in Fife in 1999 or 2000, and everyone was out in the street watching. Those must be something along the same lines? :cc_confused:
