This morning's ECM, waw at +216hrs and +240hrs.

For those too lazy to look....

With the usual caveat...'of course it'll never happen'.

Ooops, I just went back and added the frames and then saw you'd done it for me :)

The GFS ends up not a million miles away at a similar time frame, as the low swings east it brings snow on its northern flank to southern Scotland:

Interesting.

Afternoon peeps! Well, I've not long returned from dropping off our visitor at Kyle station. Fortunately the bridge was still open, and so far as I'm aware, it still is. Our biggest wind blast here so far is 57.3 mph and it's now raining. The fun and games won't really kick in until maybe around 5 o'clock and will very likely continue till the wee small hours. Passed loads of SSE vans on the way to Kyle and saw one guy shimmying up a pole on the way home. Who'd have their job, eh? Spent the main part of the morning making sure that everything that could possibly fly off has been made secure, topping up coal and wood buckets and charging batteries. All we can do now is wait and hope it doesn't turn out as bad as is forecast.

Perhaps the GFS is wrong, but what you've got now is as bad as the GFS is forecasting it to be for you. Bad for the Hebrides but not too bad elsewhere? Edit: Having looked again it's maybe going to be worse at about 9pm :(

Torriental rain in Glasgow really horrible.. Can't even jump out the car into a shop as you are soaked.. Hate these types of conditions and what follows these heavy and blustery showers just wet and cold.. Give me a classic Warm Front anyday least it's not as bad as this.. Finally starting to get lighter now as I type.

Another short but very sharp burst about to hit. Possibly a very small squall?

Prepare yourself for unbelievable squal!!

It was like a hurricane, or small tornado with the wind suddenly picking up and whipping rain all over the place and the trees bending back in a way I can't recall seeing. A short but impressive squall.

The squall lines forming are very distinct on the radar, some people are in for a short, sharp treat.

Well, I have had a fun drive today from Aberdeen via Perth back to West Lothian, high winds and plenty of squall lines to negotiate in failing light.

Some chart data for Abigail, looks like core of windfield has held back a touch North from earlier plots.

Decent wrap on the water vapour imagery with a neat stratospheric dry slot, also shown via the red on the RGB airmass.

Re: the storm naming - I think it's about time the Met Office and Ireland Met Office gave this a go, for ages we have lots of charts with the Berlin Adopt a Vortex names. To be fair it's not either organisations fault our tabloid media are so wantonly misinformed or deliberately quoting spurious sources to produce sensationalist copy.

Interesting to hear the news bulletins today citing Abigail arrival and departure and certainly made them more concise.

Hope folks out in the NW and Isles stay safe, don't think this will be the only Atlantic Beastie we see over the coming weeks...

Edit - the charts above for windfield and rainfall are from Netweather Xtra, first is the NMM4Km and the rain overlay via the new 500m radar which opens up a brilliant level of detail.

Also neat Vine here on cyclogenesis over last period on Abigail

I reckon that's where the answer is my friend.

--

Fairly quiet here.

Roughish commute home from Embra with lashing rain at times and fairly gusty wind. Had to keep speed down due to crappy visibility and a lot of surface water / spray.

However, Abigail not giving fort SS much of look in right now.

Hope all are keeping safe out to the west and north.

Just looked at the list of MO names for this winter's storms and it just confirms my prejudice against fartbook and twatter as encouraging gormlessness.

Storm Desmond is sponsored by a porn publisher.

Storm Mary will make landfall on Xmas Eve in a barn near you...

Well having left my friends flat in Glasgow at 6:20 to catch the bus home to Inverness, we've not yet left Perth. Departure from glasgow delayed by 40 mins due to waiting on the London bus which had been held up because of weather conditions (grumble grumble Southern softies), thus meaning we've had to wait in Perth for the next connecting bus.

HOWEVER, this does mean (as a small silver lining) that it'll be pretty wild at Drumochter and Slochd on the way home and I'll (maybe) see my first heavy snow of the season. Wish me luck!

Hoi you just called myself and lorenzo to name but one twats as twatter users....to be fair there are a lot of numpties...I reserve my hatred for pussbook...Oh how I love the wife reading to me from her tablet many tales of people I don't know....I might start shouting across the room that's HC been oot all day and got soaked and see if she appreciates the irony as she screws her face up at me :)

Already force fed myself a burger in the nearby Maccy D's just to avoid sitting in that Orwellian hellhole.

For the record, I Re-tweeted the Storm name competition but didn't hit them up with an entry.

Twitter is bloody useful for bouncing ideas around and theories, been busy on there tonight chatting with one of the guys who i hold as the best in the states for knowledge on LRFs and also the stratosphere and everything in between.

Will admit that it does serve another function to create ' noise' - this is perhaps best exemplified when the tabloids release absolute nonsense.

Out of the Met Office storm names - I though Frank was the funniest.

Got a bad case of Rapid Cyclogenesis - talk to Frank...

They could have opened up the storm naming to some form of sponsorship, I'm sure there's plenty of jokes to be had from it but it's too late for my little brain.

Cripes... Sorry chaps.  I'll crawl back into my blackhouse and stare at the guttering flames....

I don't do Twitter (yet) but have been on Facebook for ages...time to get with the times HC :D
