If it's just about snow for me, anyone downstream with another 100m or so of altitude should enjoy things!

The wind is more westerly at the moment.

Definitely not north west.

These are surface winds. Due to the friction of the land and the coriolis force, surface winds turn to the left (or right in the southern hemisphere) relative to upper winds which will be north-westerly.

Reminds me of an event a few years ago where PPN just grow out of nowhere ovee midlands and stalled above us, it gave us some good snow. At least I think I remember it... maybe it was a dream :p My memory is not great but i'm pretty sure it really happened. The important point was it was not forecast at all.

I remember. They said showers over wsles today. Sbout 3pm it started snowing and everyone was caught out. Took me 2 hours to do a 10min journey.

noticed that, years ago, surface winds here seem WSW'ly, upper winds WNW

Yup, the effect is lessened over the sea due to less friction.

How are all these showers developing across wales?!! Theres nothing over the irish sea or crossing over from ireland aswell!! Weird

Shaky

Looking at the radar. It shows lots of showers over the west of Ireland, but they are dissappearing over the east coast.

Presumably the lower levels still contain moisture and  this is added to over the Irish Sea. On hitting the welsh mountains they must be forced upwards into the colder air above and bingo.

Hope we all see the effect  (and it is true!)

Oooh, unlucky with the current one. Just grazing the fragmented edge of it. No more than a few flakes flying around.

Still plenty more out west to play with.

Dont get too excited many of the showers across Wales are sleet or rain this evening :( (not that there are many in the first place)

I did wonder, snow I had was wet, only PM air, never really going to deliver anything exciting under around 150m asl

Just too far east here in cov for anything to reach. Hopefully later.

Too far east, too far south,  too far west. We (Leics/Cov/Northampton etc) get the weak stuff off pretty much any setup. Just how it is i'm afraid. We're okay if it's a big band of PPN but showers more often than not end up like this.

And now it's raining. Not even sleet, just cold rain. :( When it gets heavy, it just about turns to snow, but otherwise it simply isn't quite cold enough. Hoping for something a little better later. (Had a look on the radar: this one was coloured for snow. I can tell you, this bit ain't!)

A brief sleet/wet snow shower at 6pm and thats it so far. BBC weather page is getting annoying. It was first saying sleet for tomorrow, then heavy snow, and now back to sleet...rather like last week! However this does seem at odds with the current radar projections suggesting it will be snow. We shall see...

Derby not doing well either with only a few flakes all day and everything missing just a few miles to the north. Mountain forecast for Peak District looks good for tomorrow (heavy snow and blizzards). My plan is to head up there and do some filming but just hope the roads are clear enough to get.

  • April 2024 - Was it that cold overall? A look at the statistics

General perception from many is that April was a cold month, but statistics would suggest otherwise, with the average temperature for the whole month coming in just above the 30 year average for the UK as a whole. A warm first half to to the month averaged out the cold second half. View the full blog here
