We had a hail shower this afternoon.

Been ages since I saw hail so it was a surprise.

Otherwise cold but clear and sunny for pretty much all of the day.

Surprisingly stayed mostly dry here today, was expecting a few beefy wintry showers. Even the southern Lakeland fells haven't seen much, with a dusting in parts only.

Tomorrow will see a frontal snow event from the west, the fells will see some hefty totals. Pity we have milder uppers undercutting the front and less of a cold pool ahead of it, but will be interesting to see how long any snow lasts to low levels and whether it just melts on touching the ground or sticks. We can see trifling amounts under such set ups, but we are on the wrong side of marginal, a few tweaks here and there i.e. a slower moving front, colder uppers ahead and behind it and more of a SE flow rather than S flow would have done the trick (think Jan 26 2013), but I'm fairly confident I will at least see some wet snow falling from the sky.

Monday and Tuesday look wintry, plenty of heavy sleet/snow showers, any overnight likely to stick, so Tuesday morning could see some snow cover..

Well we've had three hours of heavy wet snowfall which quickly stuck to grass, roof surfaces but not the roads. It has only just turned to sleet/rain. Current temp 2.3 degrees. A very marginal set up, evaporative cooling thanks to the intensity of the precipitation and favourable dewpoints have been the reason for snow down to modest levels in the central lakes - these are the best set ups for this part of the region. A colder airmass ahead and a stalling more favourable tilted front would have produced a notable snowfall here..

Bursts of sleety snow on and off - no settling at valley level  (it's 1.7C) - but will be wet snow layer higher up.
Not counted 2mm yet so not much has actually fallen.

well another weird day, some places having snow where you didn't expect then places you expect had not so much... here today its been cold with rain mixed with sleet, then sleet/wet snow, then back to rain, then hail and sleet and now rain with odd snow flake mixed in during heavier bursts.

Hopefully tomorrow may bring some potent shower of hail and snow to some depending where these align from west to east

Woke up to a nice surprise covering of snow which has settled on the side roads. Must have been a hefty shower to settle on the wet ground. Like most of this winter will probably jinx any further shower activity.

It's such a shame this winter as there has been so much potential throughout but mostly on the wrong side of marginal.

Still it's nice to enjoy these nice surprises when they do occur, fingers xd for a decent 2015 part deux.
