After a lull of about 20 days, a new subtropical depression has developed to the north of Puerto Rico. The system consists of a well-defined curved band to the north of the system, but convection is limited to non-existent over and to the south and east of the center.

STD 07L is forecast to move northward and intensify into a weak tropical storm, before getting abosorbed into a frontal system.

Sustained winds up to 70mph now, and no longer subtropical. I'm starting to wonder if it might make hurricane status before getting absorbed into a cold front. While vertical shear is still high, SST's are quite warm so we might get lucky and see a weak Category 1 from Fay.

I'm wondering that too Sainsbo. It may npt be a pretty hurricane if it does make it, or a conventional looking one, but then neither were Bertha or Cristobal. Only a 5kt increase in wind is needed so it's possible.

Fay has remained in a steady state over the last 24hrs. Winds remain at 60kts. An imminent rise in shear is expected, which should cause some weakening before it becomes absorbed by a front.

Even though it is only for the statistics, Fay has reached hurricane strength. it has to be noted that the "cloud pattern" (if one can call it a pattern) is loosely organized at best. With this upgrade, Fay is really invigorating the streak of ugly Atlantic hurricanes this season  .

In 24hrs, brutal levels of shear have reduced Fay from a hurricane to an open trough. Fay has been racing eastwards today as it became involved with a cold front. Regeneration is not expected.
