Very interesting overnight.  As Solentwaters has noted, clearly lava/flames coming out of the fissure at the moment.  Also, looking at the plot on the IMO website although the total number of quakes is lower than this time yesterday, the proportion of quakes over 2 is higher with several over 3.  As suspected, the larger quakes have been in the night time hours.  The scatter has been greater than Friday night and there is clearly a different behaviour being evidenced.

Looking onto the 3d Bulge plots there are three areas where the larger quakes are occurring:

1 - Bunga

2- roughly half way along the fissure

3 - at the end of the fissure.

The latter, when taken together with the lava leaking out of the fissure might imply that the lava feed into the fissure remains strong and that its seeking to expand into more difficult territory at the end of the fissure, but is finding that the way to the surface has less resistance.

Can see what looks like steam on cam 2 but its covered by dust thats been whipped up by the storm.

nothing mentioned on the IMO yet.

Also several EQ's located at around the caldera in the last couple of hours including 2 M3.6

Would be interesting to see exactly what is going on behind that dust but i do not think we will be able to until

the winds change direction.

The camera is at http://www.livefromiceland.is/webcams/bardarbunga-2/

It looks like almost all of the tremor recorders are showing increased activity, but this appears to be almost universal so perhaps storm related?

Cloud and dust have rolled in. There are several clear screenshots from earlier this morning in the Volcanocafe comments section of the latest blog entry so have a look there.

Hard to see from the webcams at the moment.  Looks to be blowing an absolute hoolie though.  I had also noted that the IMO have upped the warning level for an eruption at Baroarbunga.  The 500+m of ice though will take a lot of punching through before anything could be seen I would have thought.  The weight of this though must make some sort of structural collapse of the caldrea or flanks more likely though?

the lights on the cams earlier wasn't any kind of eruption or anything to do with any magma it was the IMO driving around placing more sensors around the area.

Yep, caught out last night by the sensitivity of cameras in the dark.

Never mind there is something this morning :-)

That looks a bit more energetic than the eruption earlier in the week

A large number of (as yet) unverified quakes near the surface this morning. Could be wind affecting the instruments or could be a prelude to a more general fissure eruption

Things are clearly quiet different on the various tremor graphs this morning - and one or two are way out.  Jon Frimmar's Hekla plot is active, but Boovarsholar is flat-lining.  Not sure if its the storm or something more generally seismic is afoot.  I see the rate of quake occurrence has fallen since the fissure opened and pressure is let out.

Unfortunately, we'll have the storm interference for the next 24 hours at least. I also think the lessening of the earthquake occurrence is due to the renewed fissure activity.

This is the best photo reel I have seen yet of lava flows.

Spectacular.

Just had a look at the models and the position of the high pressure cell towards the end of the week is bound to raise some eyebrows! If the eruption produces ash then northern Europe appears to be in the firing line!

According to John Freeman the stormy conditions mean that fewer earthquakes are going to be detected due the wind noise.

Also, the progress of the dyke towards Askja appears to have stopped and he doesn't know why that is (although that was written before the current eruption which may explain the lack of progress).

You're welcome. He will give us another update later today which of course will have info about the state of the current eruption. :)
