The changing daylight hours thread

Recommended Posts

Had to draw the curtains last night as well as the blinds in my bedroom as the sun is waking me up too early now.

It struck me last night just how light it still was at 9pm even with the rank weather.

Yes starting to notice the nights drawing out with some pace now, especially this evening under the clear skies. Still relatively light at 9pm, and only properly going dark around 9.30pm. However, grey wet evenings such as Tuesday saw me drawing the curtains before 9pm and there was a dark look to things as early at 8pm.

Looking at the sunset and sunrise times, I think there is a good hour or so more daylight left in the evenings until we reach the solstice, less of a rate of increase in the mornings though. In a month's time a clear sky in the evening will keep things light beyond 10pm, and quite often even until about 10.30pm with twilight setting in, where it never truly gets dark all night - wonderful evenings especially when combined with no wind and warm air aloft.

Yes , sun starts to head south soon. First winter thread is open in 16 days time (mods will close it of course)

Weather 'experts' start coming back slowly at first.

First 'winters over' comment is only 16 weeks away. :drinks:

How very depressing. Mind you, reading some of the comments in the mod thread the past couple of weeks the winter "experts" haven't gone away this year.

Yep, probably facing another snowless, dreary dull 6 months in the process. Some forecasters last winter were so far from the truth of what actually happened too.

Glad were at the best time of the year right now.

This Summer is already going the same way. Long may it continue!

July and August to get through yet. Pretty confident 30c will be achieved by then.

Yes probably. Truth be told I don't like completely grey Summer's, I do like thundery mentalness and some warmth, but it's nice to balance it out with some unseasonably cold weather. 30C always does and undoubtedly will be hit in my Summer location (Chelmsford).

What, if anything, do you gain from that? Summers in Chelmsford, and the UK in general, are already cool by global standards - consider yourself lucky.

Get outdoors,, have fun and enjoy the long hours people! Or be boring and unsocial able and be inside watching TV and counting down the seconds to winter...

Alarm went off at 5:05 and the sun wasn't in my eyes - we seem to have lost 10-15mins in the morning already

The amount of daylight lost each day is now increasing pretty quickly. Losing 90 seconds today, will be up to 2 minutes next week.

Will be a little while before it's really noticeable though, usually around mid-August for me.

Gladly, much how the endless gloom of winter drags on & on & on & on, the lovely long days are around for a good while yet!

Indeed. Not really looking forward to when the short days chase the long days away, even though the shorter daylight hours towards early Winter sets the atmosphere for Christmas - that part of which I don't mind too much. However, when it gets towards mid to late January, then sorta wish the days could suddenly become as long as that of mid to late Spring (Edit: yet without it becoming too warm for snow). The major culprit of the shorter days is having to do that routine that a number of people dread - getting up for school/college/work in the dark! Those dim mornings makes you just want to go back to sleep, though I guess some people will find getting up in the dark, enjoyable. But it's just as well there's still a few months to go before those longer days are taken out by the shorter ones.

A certain dimness out there tonight already. Noticeably different to a couple of weeks ago, although cloudcover may be playing a part.

Wow you must be the only person who mentions winters gloom in mid July, you seem to always bring it up way out of season, it's an eternity until winter's long nights and people don't need to be constantly reminded of it.
