Great. The descent into difficult sleeping after night shifts begins.

Have you tried blackout blinds? They are very effective in keeping the room dark.

So those that work days do not suffer in the early mornings then? it is not just ME ME ME, times change and effect everyone, and yes I work shifts!

You dread daylight? Are you a vampire?

I think you need an economic reality check wrt how much extra we'd have to pay for food if we and others at our latitudes couldn't grow any crops.

Whatever, neither your wishes nor mine will have any effect on day length.

Bring on the long days of summer!!!!!

Agree, not that we have any choice in it nor any change to it, and like you say it has an impact on social life and food production should it all change.

Roll on summer!

Sunset is 15:54 today, 1 minute later tomorrow. I love snow in winter but hate it getting dark before 4pm some days.

Was there really any need for that? I never mentioned anything about those who work days so I don't know where your criticism is coming from. I was merely stating how as the mornings get lighter, those who work nights will find it more difficult to sleep. Have you a problem with that statement?

It amazes me how worked up people get about something nobody can control!

You did imply that it is difficult for sleep after a night shift, it is difficult for many on various shifts, day or night.

Everyone wants a 24/7 always on life these days it seems, so there is only one way to get that and it involves someone, somewhere working a shift that is awkward.  As daylight changes thus we must adapt, what ever hours you work/live.

Nick, would you accept a little advice from someone who's done 'nights'  for years? If possible, try to develop a routine where you stay up after work until mid/late afternoon. Wake up just before work and when you finish the ensuing night shift you're as fresh as a daisy. It's great 'cos you have most of the day free. No good if you've a busy social life as your evenings are spent asleep, but who goes out socialising just before a night shift anyway? The day shift kills me - having to go to bed at a certain time, up with the lark and coming home feeling shocking and thinking about the distant bedtime. Summer, with its attendant heat and light amplify the problem hugely. I'm on nights this week - came home at 0630 and did loads of chores before going into town. Feel bright as a button, having a spot of 'dinner' and will be retiring to bed around 3pm.

Weve already gained 2 minutes in the evening. But its really after a couple of weeks in January that you notice it.

We will gain 3 minutes in the evening today, and have our first sunset at 1600 hrs and later. Mornings still getting darker.

Maybe I'm imagining it but it does seem to be noticeable already in terms of evening light.

I think what it is, is we've had a lot of cloudy afternoons so its often got dull very early but when we get a clear afternoon and we still have some daylight after 4pm it plays tricks with us, we've only gained around 5 minutes in the afternoons and we won't really notice a big difference till the second half of January when it starts get to dark after 16:30

The solstice passed about seven minutes ago and that means that the sun is now northward bound! Spring is now on it's way!

Longest night since 1972 I believe I saw somewhere earlier.

More than a minute, almost 10 minutes later sunset already.
With snow on the ground it is already quite noticeable and not fully dark until about 5pm
Latest sunrise is more or less tomorrow.
