Hello John, hope all is good in the Shire ? Yes, the last 10 years or so it has been on the increase for snow depth amounts especially with height, say around 1000m. Not particularly cold but certainly enough depth of cold in the main ski villages to produce the goods. Salzburgerland especially favourable . However, this particular snow event quite widespread in the Eastern Alps. The picture below is from my old abode in Katschberg this afternoon on the borders of Karten no more than 30 km to the south from where I am now. Heavy snow is now also being reported in the Tyrol.

Some more pictures of the continuing snowfall in the region this evening. Always looks better at night.

The clear up operation starts on one of the hotels in the village. Snow is not a problem but dripping into Goulash Suppe is !

The switzerland thread is dead so thought you might be best to ask carinthian. I'm in Western switzerland 450m asl for possibly the rest of the month. Prospects aren't great at home for snow but do you see any glimmer of hope for here or is it as equally as bleak as the UK. Apparently there's only been snow a handful of times here this winter,  all dustings. Cheers

Hi, certainly so far the Western Alps have not seen much snow as in Austria. Even at your altitude seems to be rare so far this winter. Euro high not in a good position for French and Swiss Alps and forecast out to 10 day not showing much of an improvement in the snow stakes. Hope things change for you for the second half of the month !

Thanks for the reply. Here's hoping it changes before I go back.

Yes. Sadly none in the town I'm in. Will hopefully get a day trip to the mountains before I head back.

Lovely to start Sunday before more snow moves in later in the evening.

It does seem that in recent years the volume of snow you are getting seems to be increasing .In this world of CC there are winners and losers and I think with altitude you are a winner and will continue to be so in future years. Those resorts of low altitude will probably be losers going forward so I suppose the theory going forward if people are booking ski holidays is book resorts with good altitude!!

Definitely. I first went to Austria in 1976 and have noticed the increase in snowfall amounts at level 1000m and above in the winters in the period 2005- to present. However, this has not been the case at lower levels, especially below 500m with greener winters now more the normal for the populated regions.  Maybe as you say, GW  is increasing snow precipitation amounts in the higher mountains. I know my wifes village in Alpbach was always snow-covered  in the winters 60s/ 70s but not anymore as the village is just under 1000m in height.  So at a guess, maybe pick a resort at 1000m or more to guarantee  some snow cover on a more regular basis.

Yes, huge amount of snow building. None stop for 20 hours and still going strong as night descends.

Yes, @Jo Farrow dream conditions today but there is danger in the mountains currently with many avalanches due to the massive snowfalls combined with a mixing of warm and cold uppers almost on a daily basis. However, stick to the pistes , it is wonderful and almost deserted !  Get yourselves booked to Salzburgerland !

This picture was taken in the local mountains as the snow storm cleared on Tuesday. Today , it is full on sunshine ☀ and feels warm to. Temp in the village 3c  but 7 c higher up. Some temps as high as 16c recorded this afternoon in Southern Carinthia. The strange winter continues , one day freezing winds and snow the next warm and sunny .

Off to Saalbach in mid March and just wondering what the local Long term trends are suggesting?

How was it ? Where did you stay in resort ? I know first 10 days in March was nice and sunny  but was back in Blighty for the rest of the month.  Nice start to the day ( 10th of May ) , snow line now starting to gather some pace up the mountain but still plenty on view at around 1500m and above.

Strong late Spring sunshine taking hold now over the village. Some snow patches still in evidence. Current temp this morning 19c. Maybe going to be the warmest day of the year so far .

Winter kiss today. Snow down to 1500m just above the village. Feeling very cold this evening with temp around freezing point. Log fire stoked up again ! Hate cold at this time of year. Reminds me of East Yorkshire Wolds.
