Evening, just an amazing day today. Bright afternoon sunshine in Mautendorf at 1000m asl with only a few shower clouds scattered about and temp of +6c. 15 km drive up the valley to Obertauren, arrive in a snowstorm with powder snow blowing around and a temp of -7c at 2000m. That's just an amazing lapse rate, can only happen at this time of year with origins of Arctic Airmass moving in. Could be some fantastic snow cover at height over the coming days.

Some wow pictures from this morning. One of the best snowfalls of the year ! All very lonely apart from the odd few skiers out enjoying the conditions. No lifts in operation, so its either walk up the mountain or ski doo lift . Wonderful in the mountains this morning, will have to delay trip back to freezing cold blighty. C

Hi Paul. Great photo and we'd be celebrating if that were in November :)!! But at this time of year it reinforces the view that it's a disappointing start to Summer for many mountain villages and resorts (well other than the glacier ski resorts - they're no doubt loving it!). My contact living in the French Alps emailed last week and mentioned how dreadful the weather has been this Spring/early Summer so far, but he optimistically predicted "a scorcher" would arrive soon!

Hi Malcolm, 2 weeks I will be back . My friend sent me this photo from the Austrian Lakes Region last evening. Sparkling , see how low the snow line is ? Hope for some warmer weather on my return !

Nice summers morning in Katschberg. Time for a good ramble through the Alpine meadows on the Gontal Valley and a beer at lunch.

Looks absolutely wonderful Paul!! Hope you had a nice lunch with a beer sat in the sun!

Any thoughts on how the summer will unfold over the coming weeks on the Continent? I'm thinking of doing a 'spur of the moment' trip and drive down to the Alps for a summer break. But so far, with the jet on a frequent southerly track, the weather doesn't appear to have been any great shakes over there. However, GFS seems to be hinting at something more settled and warmer?

Evening Malcolm, certainly different summer so far over here. Still good in the Eastern Alps. Last summer was a scorcher and record break, like a 1976 ( UK ) event. At my elevation 1760m there a noticeable difference to last summer with a greater heat transfer or flux as I call it, which really means the upper flow is of maritime rather than stagnant sub continental. Yes, still warm , more in line with average continental temps rather than record breakers over the past 2 summers. You might be amused I watched the Wales game in the local bar with a visitor to the area . He came from Carmarthan ! We both got rather jaffa cakesed. He broke out into Men of Harlech, rather to the amusement of the locals. Great night. Had to walk my hangover off today, good job the wife was away working.

sNice summers day yesterday in the Austrian Mountains. Warm and not overly hot as last year. Picture above Katschberg on the Gamskogel at 1800m asl with the highest church in Austria. A build up of cumulus cloud , fairly shallow and remained dry. Looks similar today. This time last year the meadows were scorched but now very lush with plenty of Alpine flora around.

Nice summers day today with fair weather cumulus. 27c in the valley and 15c at 2000m height. Very comfortable heat with a stiff cooling breeze.

Another nice summers day on the Katschberg. Currently 18C in the village but 30C expected in the valley. Still a nice refreshing breeze and light cumulus development. Lazy day today with beer, tennis, F1 and Euro Final.

Looks like our hottest day of the summer so far. 22C at 850mb level, so 30C generally at 1000m asl . Plume of warmer air mass invading with lighter wind flow at all levels for the next two days. On the look out for scattered thunderstorms breaking out over the Hohe Tauren range later today. Looks like Wednesday will turn cooler and wetter as the cold front clears, then much fresh for the end of the week.

One of my favourite pit stops is having a new roof. The Aineck- Stubn is a sunny spot at the end of one of the longest easy runs in Austria and the ski fodder on offer is super.

Morning all, another cool cloudy day in these parts. Wind from NE, now thankfully lighter it blows. Temp 3.8c presently. Looking at our local bigger mountain The Karieck, it is still holding snow patches on its northern slopes to fairly low levels at around 2200m mark. This time last summer , the extreme heat left the mountain void of any snow patches.

The sunshine and warmth has arrived back after a 6 day cool spell in these parts of Austrian Alps.

Just in time too as well be arriving for 2 weeks R&R in Mayrhofen on Saturday. Any Web based weather site for Austria you'd recommend for accurate forecasts?

Hi Ravelin, like the Scot/ Euro Flag. Love the Zillertal in the summer. Best use the Austrian National Weather Service to get the best online forecasts..www.zamg.ac.at/cms/en/weather

Have a nice trip.

The Gamskogelhutte (1850m asl )  A nice walk up from the village for a spot of afternoon tea, sun trap and great for storm watching over the surrounding mountains.

Sunshine back today after a dull wet few days. View looing south towards the middle village and adjacent black run.

Morgan all, our changeable summer continues, back into cloud again for the past 2 days. Big difference to last summer when we had weeks on end of heat and drought conditions. Still plenty of snow patches on the higher mountains to be seen.
