The harsh reality is it's very unlikely to affect our area, lol we are so hard done by. On the flip-side it's very cold outside currently -5.4c

Nah, you don't want the snow to make it this far North. Better that it stays in the South and then shears SE. If it gets this far North then the South will get rain and the low pressure will erode the building block to our north.

Better to take the longer term option and miss out on the snow this time around: the cold will then be locked-in for much longer and we will get more snow in the week(s) to come. Easterly wind will strengthen and lake-effect N Sea snow will be the order of the day.

Enjoy the ride but short term pain really is long term gain on this one. good.gif

Sounds like a plan to me. Could this cold spell be sound for a while then.

Yep spot on.It will be frustrating if we miss out later in the week, but if we do manage to get a very cold NE,ly in around 10days or so we could be looking at significant snowfall and it would be worth the short term pain.

The high would not be eroded if the low is further NE it would just mean subsequent lows would push further east. That highs staying put!

Methinks it will be. I had a real RAMP on here last night: my first in over five years on NW, where I mostly lurk it has to be said. However, I do think this time we are on the cusp of something very special and everything is falling into place.

Enjoy it, we may have to wait a very long time to see what we are about to see again acute.gif

OK but we need that slider to pump up the block to the north and make it stronger. The added bonus of course for here is that it will allow the N Sea snow machine to really crank up.

Thundersnow anyone? blum.gif

Is this currently one of the best set ups people have seen for potentially something special. Would this be a matter of days or weeks?

Also what is a slider?

It is when the jet stream is negatively tilted with the block to the north and east so the lows from the atlantic slide South and south east under the block wihich then gives us the easterly component.

Hope that helps smile.png

Went down to -5.8 early in the evening, but up to -3.3 now. The bonus was a few more snow showers coming through, nothing too heavy but the car is covered again. As has been mentioned, a change in direction of the showers now, so not sure if we'll get any more.

Been around here long enough to know them totals or rather Precipitation charts are a waste of time from the GFS unless within 24hrs or less, the high pressure currently to the N/E isn't going anywhere fast, couple this with low temps across the UK i feel it aint going anywhere if anything it will build as slider lows become more evident across the southern half of the UK, initially it looks like the west of the UK will benefit wrt to snow, however the Atlantic normally has at least a couple of attempts at ingression so all is not lost, the key is here i think that should the high hold we are going to see some major cold towards the latter week or so of the month, and being towards the north n east, some places will benefit not only from the atlantic trying to gain access but also major artic air from the north/east, n i'm looking forward to the latter to see the convective potential of the N.Sea when the really cold uppers arrive drinks.gif

Not looking good now I'm afraid. ECM says yes, but others say no.

If this snow event comes to fruition, I advise you not to post, you'll be riddled with jealousy!

was -5.1C in early December.

I'm glad i don't work outside, wrap up warm today if you do, it looks harsh out there, although beautiful with the snow cover. cold.gif

Quick summary for Friday..

GFS says no snow at all.

ECM says snow, but not as heavy as further west.

GEM and UKMO both say hours of heavy snow.

Who will be right? The Met Office favour GFS I believe. Huge disagreement though.

-4.7C at the moment after a low of -5.2C. (Not bad for the coast!!). Met website forecast show persistant sleet sat and sun so I'd rather it be dry and cold!! :)

Met Office fax charts show the front over our region, and all hope is not lost.. yet.

I see the freezing fog here is causing the odd flake to flutter down. Gardens mostly covered in snow still, field behind my house less so because a lot of the snow has been trampled by people going to and form school (popular route for two schools!).

Brrr, morning all.

My outside digital thermometer reads -7.5 ºC at the mo'.

Clear skies here. Everything white.

Wonder if we'll get much more over Friday and the w/e.

I do worry for outdoor pets and wildlife.

I hope folks UK wide will take heed of the temps and snow forecast.

Feeding/watering the garden birds well, and I shall keep an eye on elderly neighbours too.

B. :)

I can't believe that the latest GFS says no to snow at all for Yorkshire since the uppers on the run stay below -5 from now all the way out until next Wednesday? Unless it is being suggested that the run is completely dry which doesn't look to be the case either?

In fact Yorkshire looks to be in a prime position if you are a snow fan this weekend. I have my snow shovel at the ready anyway!
