Ex Hurricane Iris Approaches: September 1995

Recommended Posts

The remains of hurricane Iris moved up the English Channel during early September 1995 taking a track similar to the remains of Floyd almost 2 years previous. A 962 mb low off the SW approaches is impressive for early September. Gave a wet spell to the south, useful rain as parts of the country was gripped in drought conditions.

Remember this month fairly well since it was kind of contrasting to August when on the 21st or 24th Aberdeen broke it's all time temperature record of nearly 31°C which was a day of hazy sunshine.

The September was incredibly wet, perhaps the wettest in NE Scotland since records began.

I think there was much flooding since the ground was so hard after a hot, dry summer that all the water couldn't seap into the soil and just lay on top.

Looking forward to seeing the footage for the rest of 1995 and well into 1996, a period I remember vividly. Winter 95/96 saw numerous snowy very cold periods with arctic blasts and proper easterlies, on the whole it was a very non westerly winter and very similiar to winter 09/10 in this respect but not as cold.

Incredible how much variation you can have in a short time. August 1995, driest August on record and one of the driest months ever recorded south of the Border then in a space of 11 days one or two places record their wettest month on record. We have a very anticyclonic August and by the end of the first week of September, there is a sub 970mb low moving up the Channel.
