Expext much of scandi to be white come the weekend, as well as NW Russia.

Western Canada looks very cold for the time of year in the coming days as well.

Of course it's very early day's, but things are looking so much better than last year (not that that's saying much!!!).

Sweden and Finland drops the snow a little but we know it going to get a massive dump of snow soon Posted Image and a reload later.

Its warm in the Italian alps so the October snow goes off the map. but eastern Sibieria has filled in promisingly.

North Canada improves again

Northern Ice refreeze is looking very good.Posted Image

My thoughts are not really on the impressive for October cold snap coming up at the weekend and the extra snow for Scandinavia that it brings but looking ahead really to about the second week or later in November were early winter could advance on the UK via snow reloads into western Russia and then Scandinavia, will it be a 2010 to start with and then maybe more up and downs though the next four months of too cold and then warmer than expected and then cold again?!

My thoughts are on the dumpings projected for Northern parts from both sides of the Atlantic over the next couple of weeks. By then, slowly but surely I hope the permanent cover starts heading in from Eastern Europe too. Afterall, in a couple of weeks we are at least into my exciting period of the "hallfway stage" between Autumn and Winter Equinoxes. Posted Image

Having read my reply, I pretty much agree with what harsh said above but the synoptics are currently perfect (most definitely for late October). However, it is whether they remain that way into the start of my excitable period. Stratosphere watching will be the key here, so do keep a close eye on that thread too.

must say im quite impressed with the snow development like you said must have been a wild day in canada!! A continent sized blizzard!!

not really just a dusting a few hours light snowfall over a wide area that's all. A much more severe snowfall across southern Alberta and Saskatchewan today though.

Hi Aaron,

Yes great to see isnt it! This snowfall associated with a developing low that's moved east from the Norwegian Sea across northern Scandinavia and will just be leaving the east of N.Finland by midday tomorrow.

Wonderfull developments. Take a look between the chart anomaly of 22nd of october and yesterdays. The big red area around Nova Zembla is almost gone. And the good news is. More snow to come!

On the left yesterdays, in the middle 22nd of october 2012.

And 23nd october 2009 as comparison on the right.

Alaska and northwest Canada seem to be suffering a negative anom meanwhile snow-wise. Wonder how the ice trucking season will fair this year in yellow knife?
